Employment contract question

Someone I know started working for YRT but doesn't like it and wants to quit. His manager said that he signed a 6 month contract and is obligated to stay and cannot quit. I know it's BS, but wanted to confirm that he can quit anytime he wants right?

Give notice, pack your bags and move along. Of course he can quit any time. Either your friend misunderstood or his manager is a blundering idiot. There are very very few specific circumstances in which an employee can be sued by an ex-employer... so unless your friend is planning to start a competing transit system and is taking some co-workers and clients away with him, he doesn't owe them a thing

He can quit within the terms of the contract. Might say he needs to give 2 weeks notice or whatever, in the contract, he needs to read his contract.

You can leave.

tell him to show up and and just not do anything and try to get fired. then they will have to pay him out win win

Ask him to record his (manager) employer saying that, and then call me.

$$$$$

It makes sense for SOMEONE to read the contract. As southpaw points out there may be some reasonable notice that your friend has to give.
Generally the law does not like the idea of restricting people from changing jobs, even if they are contract employees.

Like was said, read the language of the agreement. To say they cannot leave amounts to a slavery model....
I deal with contacts every day, albeit not employment, but many consultant agreements, neither party is well served without exit clauses.

Have him ask if they would pay him the full fee if he did a crappy job, or would they send him packing
