Eglinton LRT

I grew up and have lived anywhere from 1km to 10kms from Pearson (Malton, TIA). I remember as a kid visiting my Grandparents in Blue Mountain area and not being able to sleep because it was too quiet, no planes. I still find it disconcerting if I am in an area with no planes. The closer I am to a runway the better I feel. Odd, I know.

Edit. Those Aircraft noise signs really annoy me. You didnt hear one single plane go by while you were looking to buy a house nearby?????

Totally get it. We lived for a long while downtown on King street. When we bought our house we bought a house with some noise around it to get the comfort noise.... I have difficulty sleeping without some ambient noise.

Looks like I’ve got some people in my area of work @250R-ICE. I knew about @bastak as he’s mentioned it before.

Both of you get it 100% the challenges we face in delivering these projects.

Recent discussion with a utility provider:

- hey you done?
- yup all yours
- you forgot this that and the other
- you’re right. I did. Sorry.
- cool when can you finish it for real?
- uh….not sure. Maybe in 3-6 months.
- uhmmm….my contractor is waiting for this at the door and you said it’s donr
- ya…about that. Sounds like a you problem not a me problem

And that’s how much 500k gets you.

Zero…and I mean ZERO accountability.

That’s just one utility provided. Add the challenges of every stakeholder with their ridiculous 10 week approval processes….shocking we get anything done in this city.

EDIT: another fun one

Property owner…

- hey why are you on my property?
- were not this is the ROW. Your property starts there
- no it doesn’t. Eff you.
- sir, this is not your property
- eff you. I’ll hit you with my car

Cops show up
2 weeks gone because of reschedule

CLAIM!
I remember having to shut down a condo garage ramp. All owners were notified well in advance.

Do you think they advised the people renting the units????

My daughter lives in Hamilton. Aircraft noise is almost non existent but sometimes it's a Lancaster or warbird.

Now imagine property owners not informing their tenants that their homes are being torn down in 30 days. Good times.

Here's a YT video of a relatively small train overpass being replaced in 4 days.

Not a huge project, but can you image anything like this being done in the GTA. Does the skillset exist here, but not the will? Who knows.
Was this something similar?

Your link is def doable in Ontario and I’m sure it’s been done. Takes a LOT of effort to plan and set everything up. Everyone needs to be on the ball, understand their role, and the people running the show need to be top notch.

Imagine moving in next to an abattoir, and then demanding that it close.

Crap like that is probably half of the phone calls to city councillors. Between industry, clubs, rail, planes, . . . Most people buy and then *****.

Subsidized almost waterfront housing on probably some of the most expensive real estate in Toronto and they want the airport shut down.

@ReSTored here you go...

72hours to close the highway, put in a box, and pave it again to allow traffic on Monday morning...

That's damn cool.

Well, thanks for posting this, very impressive. I love the way they are backfilling the structure even as it still being moved into position.

We need to see more of this to minimise traffic disruption.

Im in the Civil Engineering Design field. Mostly manage and design large scale road construction projects. Im always amazed on how long it takes us now to start a construction project. With all the studies, new regulations, property negotiations, utility relocations etc. When I started out in this field I recall it would take me a year to design and put out a large project out to tender. The construction would also take a year. These are large 2km 20 million dollor type projects. Now the same work on average takes 5 years to tender and 3 times as long to construct. What bothers me the most is all the red tape, approvals , so callect environmental protection etc we are doing now achieves the exact same result as in the past except we made the project 5x more expensive and 5x longer to build. So when it comes to the LRT being years behind schedule . Im not surprised. You know why other countries get things done faster. They dont bother with all the red tape issues. No half ass environmantal assessments, no issues with property. If they need need it they expropriate it. They dont waste years negotiating land for public infratstructure projects. Contractors have deadlines to meet. They get penalized if its delayed. They also get bonus's if they are ahead of schedule. Etc. Here in our area its all about public perception. We try to appease every one and it takesl forever to ge anything built.
I think these are called Gatekeepers -- people, special interests, and regs that weak politicians put into place to distance themselves from hard work.

Decades of indecisive politicians at the provincial and federal levels created this massive set of obstacles that keep us from moving forward, disassembling the gatekeeper system is hard work, but it appears to be gaining traction.

Ill give you an example of way the planning process takes an extremely long time and why these projects take forever to start up. In the past 20 years or so. The Provincial Government introduced what is known is the Environmental Assesment Act. Basically we have go through major proces to prove what we are proposing is the best alternative. This process has become so time consuming and costly. That on some projects it costs more to do this study than the actual design of the project. In a majority of the projects the end result was the same whether we went through the process or not. In my experience all we achieved is that we pander to the vocal minority. We could spend a large amount of design fees only to listen to few people complaing while a majority of public want the project completed as fast as possible.
This is probably another reason why the LRT is taking forever. If it were up to me I would suggest options like they they do in other countries. I would of closed up sections of Eglinton completly until that section is fully constructed. I would fairly compensate the private business that are affected or just buy them out completely. I know this sounds expensive. But when you compare it to the costs of the overuns and delays. Its alot cheaper to the taxpayer in the end and it gets the project done faster and on budget.
Vs trying to accomodate evey single person complaining about minor issues. Mega projects like the LRT are huge projects that impact 100s of thousands of people on a dayly basis for years. Their needs should take priority But when the politicians step in and the government changes every 4 years. They all add their politically correct ideas to the process and just drag everything down . As long as they look good to public perception. Thats all they care about. They never offer solutions to the problem. Just keep pushing blame around.

Agree. While it does tie up a substantial amount of money in the short-term, buy/build/sell could probably fund the project as government profits from increased land value caused by the project. You also have the upside of less complaining as you have less people affected (or at least the people affected are renters who are happy for a stable place to live). Now, buy/hold/do not build like Pickering Airport lands is beyond stupid and making the government a major long-term player in the land market which is not cool.

The Pickering Airport is a really complicated issue. If I recall correctly , the Federal Government bought out the lands a long time ago because they realized developers were purchasing lands in the area. They needed to protect a certain amount of land for an airport to provide capacity because Pearson was reaching its limits. Im not sure but I believe the intent was that cargo would go here. I could be wrong. Then over the years Pearson airport upgraded the airport by reconfiguring the runways , terminals etc. As such they were able to increase capicity. Hence no immediate need forthe Pickering by pass airport. But the need may still be there in the future.
