ECE 22.05 helmets now permitted under the HTA (Effective July 1, 2012)

Cool. I didn't realize that Snell or other ratings were even permissible without an accompanying DOT label... not that there are many Snell certified helmets that aren't DOT certified, if any.
Also, does the following statement mean that helmets and/or safety certifications are optional when not on highways? (e.g., down my neighbourhood street)

1. A helmet worn by a person,(a) riding on or operating a motorcycle; or(b) operating a motor assisted bicycle,on a highway shall,

No, a "highway" is basically any road.

“highway” includes a common and public highway, street, avenue, parkway, driveway, square, place, bridge, viaduct or trestle, any part of which is intended for or used by the general public for the passage of vehicles and includes the area between the lateral property lines thereof; (“voie publique”)

Figured. Thanks for clarifying.

Just remember ECE is not allowed State side. So if crossing the border you may have issues if a cop wants to be a pain.

As in ECE only isn't allowed, or DOT+ECE is also not allowed?

I have been riding with ECE helmets for 3 years now. Been pulled over 10+ times for various things, and never once bothered about my lack of DOT certification. But I am comforted to know that ECE is finally recognized, as it is a superior standard to DOT anyways!
