Twenty + years ago I worked at Dixie / Eginton in Mississauga. One of our managers lived in Markham and he was going nuts back then. It could take him over two hours each way. He was even trying to go north to Orangeville and across #9 and back down.
He would leave home at 7:00 AM and sometimes show up at the office about 10:00 AM. He wasn't worth talking to until after lunch, the joys of stress. FWIW after rush hour it was a 30 minute drive.
Please note: The above was 20+ years ago.
The big change is the 407ETR if you don't mind paying the fees. I hate the thing but I can be across the city in a third of the time, most of the time compared to the 401/QEW/DVP/GEX combos.
I just checked the 407 site. Markham Rd to the QEW near Burlinton is $19.87 for a light vehicle with a transponder. $200 / week = about $10,000.00 per year.
I used to do a similiar commute, it was markham to oakville. That was an ordeal. I cannot imagine extending the drive to hamilton, unless it was a short term affair i.e. > 3months.
Unless your willing to put out for 407, you will lose your mind. Maybe not right away, but the frustration will chip away at you.
I commute from Hamilton to Woodbridge. I only do it because of the 407 any other route would be way too long. It takes me just under a hour. One thing to keep in mind is the excess wear and tear and depreciation of your car.
If 407's the only reasonable option...you might as well just get a res. at McMaster. It'd be cheaper (even with the best meal plan) and you'd get new friends out of it.
I just did that drive today for work and it took me an hour with traffic and an hour and 45 minutes with. It's the construction that really messes everything up.
I did the commute from Stoney Creek to Etobicoke everyday for a year. It's miserable. And worst is there were numerous times I was half asleep at the wheel. Not recommended.
