Hey there I have a GS500F 2004 recently bought it used some of you may already know this from my previous post I'm trying to figure if the chain needs to be cleaned and then lubed or just lubed, I've attached pictures below and thanks in advance for your advice. Also if I need to clean it I've read clear kerosene with a light brush over the chain run the chain for a bit or go for short ride and that should take care of it does this sound about right?

(I tried to upload the pictures here but its a large size so here is a link to them sorry, click the pictures to see bigger size)

Wouldnt hurt.

Buy yourself a squirt bottle, and fill it up with kerosene. Put your bike on its rear stand, and spray the kerosene into the chain.
Take a brush and scrub chain as it rotates. Squirt some more on to chain as you now loosened up the grime.

Take a rag, and clean up excess kerosene.

With your bike still on its stand, start up bike, and put it into first gear. Let it run like that for a few minutes.
Shut off bike, and use (whatever chain lube) and lube up chain.

ALOT of us use Dupont Teflon multi lube from Lowes. Good stuff, doesnt fling and doesnt attract dirt.

Just an added note: the gs500's comes with centerstands, so you don't need to buy wheel stands!

makes it so much easier for maintenance (especially when travelling), combined with the half-fairing style of the F's, these bikes are so easy to do simple maintenance on (like oil changes.)

Perfect. Didnt know that .. lol.

Great thanks a lot guys and yes the oil change was very easy with the center stand, and now I know where to get that dupont lube couldn't find it before this forum rocks.

Be glad you have a few Lowes in Brampton... None in Oakville, so I usually stock up on a pile when I visit people in Brampton lol.
Workers always seem to look at me weird when I walk in and grab every bottle on the shelf (usually 4-5)

ouch! Well I was planning on doing the whole thing off anyways and anytime the chain is moving my hands are not going near it just the spray will. Thanks for the welcome
