If you do the DIY fender chop (aka the hacksaw method) chances are you can get pulled for riding at night without a white light shining on your license plate. Since all the wiring from the stock bulb should be there, I though about putting in a white LED, but for the life of me I couldn't get it to sit nice and flush with the tail. It would just look like a pimple on the back of my bike :/
I picked up this LED light strip real cheap at a flea market, which conveniently runs on 12V (same voltage as stock bulb). Since the strip has 3M glue/sticky stuff on the back, I had no problems getting it to curve and stick nicely above my license plate. One problem was that anyone following me would see a row of white LEDs under my ***... I solved that by covering half of the LED strip with black electrical tape. The only light that comes out of the LED strip goes down and lights the plate up.
