I just bought a new bike and it is still in breakin. So far i have been riding locally not going more than 4000 rpm. I was wondering if you guys rode on the highway during the breakin period? Any thoughts, suggestions??

I bought my bike from a city 30 mins away from me, my new bike was on the hwy within 5 min of me pulling out of the dealership

Nothing wrong with getting on the highway, just vary the load and RPMs.

I don't understand the break-in periods rev-limiting.

I would imagine it'd be okay to surpass 4,000RPM if you do it slowly. Don't just hammer the throttle and redline, but once the bikes warmed up I'd figure it okay to slowly climb up higher in the revs. Just don't hold a specific RPM for a length of time. Keep varying it.

So on the highway, just switch gears every so often.

Would help if you said which bike.
But nothing wrong with highway just vary the RPM lots and it's easier than on the street.

Don't ride your bike like a pussy during the breakin period. Ride it like you stole it, avoid steady constant speeds/gears, but take her right to the rev limiter dammit!

If you ride it like a pussy during break in, it'll treat you like a pussy for the rest of its life.

I agree, however there are others that will argue that method.

Yep, lots of people argue, but there's lots of evidence for a rip it or lose it break in.

I rode my bike to Vancouver during the break in period! Varied the RPM and kept it below the required RPMs. As soon as I passed the break in KM I rolled on the throttle and started shifting at redline - I was on the trans Canada going over lake superior, great road and great timing for opening her up, though I realize an oil change should have been had first!

Yeah, your first couple of oil changes are super important. I usually double what the manual recommends, and don't switch to synthetic right away.
