Designer dogs and mutts... $$$$

Taking a look on Kijiji for a new buddy...
Saw someone selling "F1" labradoodles for $900!!!
For those not in the know, F1 is meaning "first generation"... With cat breeds such as the Bengal, it's a big deal to have an F1 since the breed is a cross of a specific "wild" cat and another common cat, so they are supposedly better then the generations of having two F1 cats mate...

All these mutts now have some stupid fancy name cleverly combining the main parts of the names of the original breeds... They then charge MORE than a purebred dog.

I mailed the seller of these "F1" labradoodles, telling them it was a joke to sell a MUTT for that price. It's just some fluke that was a mating that was likely not intended and it turns out to make a decent dog... Not recognized by the CKC... Jack Russels and Border Collies have only recently been added to the list in the last few years afaik.

I just can't believe... $300 for a mutt in most cases...
My current dog, we basically paid $50 for him and he is the best hunting dog I've ever had. Not gun shy, took very little training and out hunts our purebred lab any day of the year...

People are on crack!

LOL there is another phenomenon on Kijiji that I laugh at. Straight skis going for over $300

I remember back when we bought our first dog. We went to see several breeders and every single one was a nut job. I don't know if my experience was typical or not but there are some wierd breeders out there. One wouldn't sell us a dog unless we passed an interview and then they would pick which puppy we would get. Another one would sell us a dog but we had to sign paperwork that allowed the breeder to show our dog any time they wanted to. We ended up getting a mutt for $50 and it was the best decision we ever made. The dog was smart, easy to train and had no health issues. Based on experiences friends have had with their dogs I will never buy a purebred. Some of these dogs are so badly inbred they have all kinds of health issues. Then you find yourself emotionally attached to a money pit.

Seeing from the inside of both worlds of cat and dog breeders (used to breed labs for field trial/hunting dogs, and have bred our bengal cat)... The people in the cat circles are worse than most dog breeders, and ALMOST as crazy as horse people... Cats actually have a virus that humans can catch, and one of the side effects is basically crazy cat lady syndrome...

My neighbours have a Labradoodle. I would put the damp rag hanging on the drainpipe under my sink up against it in a game of fetch for money.

My cat was free. Got him at a farm up the road, he's half barn cat and half barn cat. He grew up around dogs, and thinks he's a dog. He's more of a dog than some of the dogs we've had, he runs to meet me at the door and follows me around the house. He's a chatterbox too, loves to talk..... especially at 3am when there's a full moon!

Our dogs have always been golden retrievers, all of them field dogs with master hunter titles and a North American champion title thrown in there too. Puppies that come from such "accomplished" dogs can get pretty spendy.

I paid $1,000 for my chocolate Lab because I was gullible and knew nothing. He was an impulse buy. Although he was and is the best damn impulse buy I've ever made because I just love him to bits, I'll never buy a dog again. My future dogs will be saved dogs. Don't shop. Adopt!

I was talking to a guy from the Carribean and he mentioned that he had a dog back home. I asked what kind it was and he said "Can't you just have a dog?" Yup just a 4 legged buddy, not a fashion statement.

Have been thinking lately about getting another dog (had to put down my loyal 13yr Hector The Wonder Dog this past February), but need one that is suited size-wise to life in a truck. I've always like the Boston Terrier, but a quick Kijiji search killed that idea... $1,000 minimum for a purebred pup. WTF. I'd always promised myself that my next dog would be adopted/rescued, and Kijiji led me to a few local SPCA type sites. For some reason, this one caught my eye. maybe because I trained and lived with a blind dog for the last 13yrs. Anyway, I might fill out the paperwork for him this weekend, haven't 100% decided yet.

I have two dogs currently, Lab/collie cross and a papered American Yellow Lab. The mutt is smarter than most people i know and a control nut, she has herding issues.

The Purebred has had three leg surgeries at $1800-$2000. each, food allergies, special diet of sweet potato and kangaroo meat, and some separation issues. We have a little over $12,000.00 in him. No thats not a typo. He's five and actually gets better every day. Just love the guy.

I have no idea why people figure if you make a woodle, half wheaten terrier/half poodle, that you will get the good qualities of each. Maybe you get the stupid part of each. Then market them to people that just dont know better, oy vey. Its an industry.......

Every breed has a rescue organization. I know someone that's rescued 3 Bostons and they're all lovely.

I have one of these "designer" dogs....although I have a strong urge to punch a labradoodle every time I see one. My dog is called a "Froston" but I can't say that with a straight face because it sounds ridiculous. So I just say what she is: a Boston Terrier crossed with a French Bulldog. I couldn't afford a purebred Boston OR Frenchie. So I went with a half and half....all crazy.

She's solid as a rock and absolutely nuts, but I love her to death.

I looked for a dog that fit my lifestyle and personality, and both of these breeds fit the bill. I just happened to see her on Kijiji and it was crazy at first sight.

Why do you dislike Labdradoodles?

Every single one I've met has been ridiculously hyper and poorly behaved. I realize that's more to do with the owner than the breed, but I just haven't met one I like. Same goes for Huskies.

I figured it was the energy level. I think they're suitable dogs for people who train for marathons or something. They need sooooooooooooo much exercise.

My dog is SUPER high energy too. I just find the way they bounce around and are so "in your face" while doing it that it's put me off them. But I never would've considered one in a million years so no biggie to me.

The Labradoodle next door barks at the wind, then it barks at itself barking at the wind. It is the definition of stupid.

Agreed!

Look what you can find through adoption a $1200 CKC registered Old English Bulldog! Her name is Goober and she is 3 years old now. We originally got her as a pup and was the runt.

Funny that's how I got my Siberian Husky someone who didn't research the breed and how active they are. I have to walk mine twice a day for a min of 45min rain or shine and then there was all the obedience training not to mention the 30-60min of grooming as well to cut down on the hair. However I wouldn't trade him in for the world:D.

People who treat a dog well, and as it needs/deserves are fantastic so kudos to you.

Unfortunately, my distaste for huskies comes from living with my former roommate. She had 2 and basically kept them cooped up all day. In a year of living there I saw her go to the dog park maybe twice and walk them once. Small backyard. No exercise and absolutely NO obedience. It was heart breaking to watch someone treat any dog that way. But the way they acted just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Nothing really against the breed....just not one of my faves.
