I'm not a hunter, but i know a that 12 gauge shotgun with buckshot (maybe it was a slug,i dunno),even pointblank is a pretty stupid way to put a deer out of it's misery.Especially to the head.Wouldn't it have been smarter to use a service revolver to the heart? This isn't a cop bashing thread. So don't even think of going there.Just a question to those that know.

Seems unnecessarily messy. Obviously untrained cops.

Rethought the edit since it bordered on bashing. But that was a VERY bad kill. You have no reason at that range not to do it in one clean shot

Maybe he used birdshot

Buckshot is used for... BUCKS. Slugs are also used on deer. In fact, I've killed a deer with my 12 gauge with a slug. A 9mm to the "heart" would be unethical... And the cop likely wouldn't have a clue where the heart is anatomically anyways.

I have no clue what he was using in that shotgun, but it sure wasn't buckshoot, tripple BB or a slug... It seemed like 2 3/4" target load (but even that at 2 feet away at the base of the skull should have killed it immediately). You put buckshot in that thing and fire it point blank in to the head and it would have exploded out the other side... Deer wouldn't have even heard the boom.

I think this is horrible and I hate seeing anything suffer like this due to a person. I hunt consistently from late fall to spring for deer, coyotes, ducks/geese etc so I've taken my share of animals and I do my best so they don't suffer.

So a cop isn't all that practiced at killing. Good.
Cops are known to be horrible shots.

The suffering is over for the deer. Heart was in the right place

Sorry, i dont know what size shot the police 12g carry, but the adrenaline would be pumped up on that deer, he put it down in fairly short order. He's not a hunter likely either and i'd bet that was a really crappy part of his day.

I've had to put down a car struck deer, its not rewarding in any sense. Give the guy some slack.

Adrenaline won't make up for having part of the CNS scattered over the pavement.

A 9mm to the head would have killed it instantly, but given the location I can see why that wasn't a possibility.
