Dealership delaying on new bike

Without going into too much detail, the registered dealer where I bought a new (well, 2009 unused) scooter keeps pushing back the date when it'll be available to me for pickup. They're claiming the battery won't work and have to order in a new one. I paid for the thing ten days ago.

I can understand having to wait. What I object to is a) a long wait, and b) being told a new purchase will be ready on day x only to continually be told I'll have to keep waiting.

How long does it normally take to get a bike ready for pickup? What would you do if you were being given the runaround?

I don't think I'm being utterly unreasonable, though I'm pretty much a beginner, so I'll freely confess my ignorance. I do know purchase agreements are pretty much impossible to cancel, which isn't really what I'm aiming for. I just want what I paid for.

when I bought my bike new from a dealer I got delays also for probably over a week from when promised. my bike had to be ship from out west, and the dealer was reputable so it didn't really bother me. understand that shipping is not under the control of the sales guys and their information on that subject may not be 100%. but for a battery.. I dunno.. would it be this hard to get parts down the road should you need them?

Yes, caveat emptor and all that.

I can understand shipping being out of the dealership's hands. Now, is it normal for sales reps to tell you for sure your bike will be ready on a particular day, when in reality it could take a week longer than they say?

Why didn't he supply a battery out of one of his other bikes and replace the traded one. Shoddy delivery practice! What scooter are we talking about that the battery is so hard to get?

Never had a problem buying a bike, but when I bought my truck the dealer said next week when I put the deposit money down. Then they tried to pull a fast one and say next month....We told them we cant wait that long, were going to pull out....They said you cant do that its too late we already have your deposit, we said we just called our lawyer and he says well get that back because you made a verbal agreement. Long story short truck was shipped in from anther dealer and it was ready next week...Dont let them bully you into thinking they have you by the balls...Make a stink about it, and things will happen

I'm always interested in knowing the names of these dealerships so I can avoid them in the future.

Batteries should not take long to get, unless they have some strange propitary battery for that specific scooter. I just bought a 2010 GSA on saturday, and confirmed buying it on Tuesday, so it was 4 days from agreeing to buy and picking up the bike. It was used though, 17K on it, but still, if its just a battery it should not take that long.

May be too late now, but whenever you are buying any vehicle, do not pay for it before delivery.

Put a deposit on it, as well as a written and signed stipulation on the bill of sale that it will be delivered by a certain date or you get your deposit back in full after that date has passed.

This is invaluable advice for any vehicle purchaser. I've learned my lesson.

Thanks for the other advice in this thread. I plan to start playing hardball very soon, and have already written to the general manager.

I'm pretty sure the battery is obscure, which is the reason for the holdup. Still, for such a basic thing they ought not to be telling customers the bike will be ready only to delay not once, not twice but thrice.

Bingo, this should speed things up. Never pay upfront, that's when you get the WORSE service.

I guess I was lucky. Tuesday morning I agreed to buy the bike, and Thurs. afternoon it was delivered to my door.

And don't let the dealer convince you that they have you by the balls. My dad once paid for a vehicle, signed all the paperwork, and was doing a circle check with the dealer before driving it home and saw something he didn't like. He told the dealer he wouldn't accept the vehicle and he was walking away unless they fixed the problem.... and they did.
