Dainese Technical Sneaker
Purchased at Riders Choice
Price: ~$200
I picked up these shoes earlier this year, and I thought I'd share my experience with them. I haven't seen anyone else with them, so it may be of value to anyone considering riding shoes/boots.
Style
The look of the shoes is pretty cool. They’ve got a bit of an industrial design look to them, and they’re not overly busy. I liked that they didn’t look like space boots with hunks of plastics everywhere. They’re nice and simple, and nobody would guess that they were riding shoes if they were on the shelf of a normal shoe store. I got the “Anthracite/Black” ones, which is sort of a green-ish grey, so they don’t look dirty. The “laces” up front are sort of odd looking, but you get used to them after a while.
Comfort
The shoes are very comfortable. They have a soft sole with lots of cushion. They’re more comfortable than my regular shoes for around town. They have good ventilation, as a lot of the shoe is basically just mesh. You can feel the airflow at normal in-town speeds. The lace system is pretty comfortable, and the shoe doesn’t have any strange pressure points on the foot.
Safety
Uh…yeah. This area is where the shoes disappoint. Some of the same things that make them very comfortable also make it not terribly safe. The shoe won’t resist any sort of bending/crushing in an accident, and I’m not super convinced that the shoe wouldn’t fall apart after a bit of road rash. The plastic inserts around the ankle bone would resist grinding against the pavement, but wouldn’t take any sort of impact. The back-ankle support is too flimsy to be of use. They’re essentially normal high-tops with a few pieces of thin plastic. There is a bit of reflective tape inside the rear mesh area for better visibility at night.
Value
Well, not great. They’re cheaper than a full race boot, but a lot more expensive than a normal shoe, which I feel this is closer to. I was hoping for something more leaning toward safety, but with the looks of a real shoe. This is more of a normal shoe with hints of safety features.
Would I buy it again? Negative…I would exchange it if I could (if Dainese wants to send me a different pair, I'm game ). If you want a shoe, the Dainese Dyno shoe is probably a better bet.
