Custom paint job

Hey all,

I'm contemplating the idea of custom painting my bike (fairings only) using my own design.

Not sure if I will attempt to do it myself, but if I were to, what's involved in the process? What kind of paint is suitable for the task, and what's the approximate cost?

If I take it to a professional shop, can anyone recommend one? And again, what's the approximate cost?

I can do it at the shop for you, but as most will say, custom paint will usually run you (on clean not needing repair fairings) anywhere from 1250-3000 or more, depending on colors, design, etc

first do you have acesss to a air compresser and a paint gun, a paint booth would be ideal, but a very clean garage with good ventalation
would do, and spraying any solvent based paint use a resperator

1) strip off all plastics and gas tank and anything else you want to paint, from bike .
2) stip off all decals and remove all glue from decals
3) fix all damage on fairings and tanks ie dents or gouges on tank and plastics ( then a primer will be needed)
4) water sand all parts using 600 grit paper ( if no body work is required)
5) wash all parts with a cleaner like prime wipe then go over it with a tack rag or cheese cloth
6) spray on the paint

cost depends on, paint, design, multi colors, or and airbrushing could be from $800 -$10,000 = extreme (show quality)
i have seen paint jobs on bikes that have had over 100hrs of airbrushing.

best paint to use would be a base/clear easy to use and the base dries very fast for masking for multi color paint jobs and clear buries the masking lines.

paint is not cheap either tri coat colors with perals and candies in it could run you up to $300-400 quart and a gallon of dupont chroma clear is about $350 with the hardners and reducers

so as you can see just a one tricoat color and clear is already $600-700 then add shop rate of $60-80 hr it can get expensive real fast.
i use dupont paint paint typically but house of color has a great paint line also.

you may want to look into a wrap they are about $500- 1500 depending how many colors and complex of your design
