Crush washers...

Just got some new crush washers for my dimple plug oil drain bolt. Could only get copper ones instead of the aluminum one that was there. Always wondered, is there no corrosion problem with these because of two dissimilar metals in contact?

while I'm on the subject, any problem with using fibre ones? What about nylon...isn't that a no-no because of heat issues?

I see no problem with Al ones. My car comes with them & never had any issues.

Use aluminum , or copper.

if your engine casing is made of aluminum and the one you took out was aluminum there is a reason.

It took two doses of caffeine for me to remember the answer for this.

Yes, this is a galvanic corrosion issue. Copper and aluminum are not friends. Most automotive oil pans are not (or were not) aluminum, but sheet metal (so copper works & is superior for some other reason I can't remember). Most motorcycle oil pans are aluminum.

Only benefit to copper is you can reuse them a couple times if they're not crushed to ***** although I prefer not to. Even if there was a corrosion issue, which there isn't, its a crushwasher, you're going to change it out soon anyway.

Will you experience galvanic corrosion? Yes

Will it create any problems for the limited time the washer is on the oil pan? Probably not
