Cracked car navigation screen: where to get it repaired?

yum yum

I cracked the screen on my car's navigation screen yesterday. Anyone know where I can get this fixed?

I called the dealership and they told me that whole unit will need to be replaced. It's just the screen that's cracked, so there must be a way of only replacing the screen (as opposed to the whole unit).

The car's a 2013 Subaru Outback 3.6.

The screen is built into the unit, so yes the whole unit would have to be replaced. The nav unit is considered an LRU (Line replacable unit) and not meant to be opened up and individual components replaced. With that being said, nothing is stopping you from trying.

If it's not something that you can claim under warranty, and if the only option is to swap out the entire unit, consider going after market. Could probably get a better/faster/updated unit for less than an OEM replacement.

The nav unit must have been made by a subcontractor no? I doubt Subaru make their own, find out who that is and see if they can offer a factory screen replacement.

Thanks for the replies!

I guess I'll take a look at replacing the whole unit. I'm going to take it out to see what company they're using. I tried to track down this info, but not turning up much other than it might be a Pioneer or Fujitsu.

Can anyone recommend a place in the GTA (or online) that sells nav systems?

If you're leasing the vehicle you may not have a choice but to put in the OEM one. But if you bought it, there's a ton of places that will do good installs on aftermarket stuff. Check kijiji tons of guys advertising this service, and search the forums for your specific model and you'll get lots of good info there. Good luck.

Last unit I got was from Crutchfield.com, and had it delivered in the US. Great Pioneer unit with factory hookups and the dash piece that integrated into the car. Most of the stuff they make these days, they make it plug-and-play, so no more splicing, cutting and soldering like before.

I've heard that for 2013 models Subaru went with a Fujitsu model and it's been having issues. A quick google search confirms.

Consider joining a message forum for your make/model and check out the classefieds, people sell factory stuff all the time and you could potentially find one for cheap.

Most of these systems are an -Vehicle Infotainment system that provide more than just NAV functions. (HVAC, Bluetooth, OBD, vehicle settings etc) They may have an exchange system. Depending on the cost of it you may want to consider an insurance claim.

Just did some more digging around, it might be "too new" to have after market things fit. Your best bet is to see what Subaru says.
Agree with the insurance claim idea. If it's an all encompassing do all unit, then you're boned.

Why not try getting a used one? Maybe someone might be parting their car? Some insurance write off?

/thread.

Thanks for the additional suggestions, guys! I've done what everyone has said, so I'm hopeful that there's a relatively low-cost solution.

And for those using suction cup windshield mounts, be careful! That's what cracked my nav screen. I had my motorcycle GPS mounted to my windshield, and the mount came off. My gps fell on my nav screen and shattered it. D'oh!

Pretty weak screen.....
I smacked mine good with a hockey stick (Loading from the trunk between the seats and no damage to my GPS unit and its a cheap Chinese one)

Call the manufacturer, explain the situation, ask for some goodwill assistance. You'll be amazed what some companies will do to ensure customer satisfaction.

Other option is ask the dealer if there is a flat rate repair option through the manufacturer which is often available.
