bike is 98 kawasaki zx6r

bought it about a month ago. guy said never been dropped and is been clean. I changed tires, frame sliders n lights here n there but until today morning i noticed a crack underneath the tank on the frame. it freaked me out. I researched a bit and few people have this problem with the bikes that is been used for stunts and stuff but I am a new rider and havent even got proper chicken strips on tires yet. here are the pics of it. I contacted Kawasaki corporate and they recommended to go through dealer. I have booked an appointment to get frame inspection tom, but i am just worried about today since i m riding it. is it something common that happens in bike this age , is it dangerous to ride and what should i do? Thanks alot in advance

All I can say is that the crack will get bigger over time. How fast? I can't say. It may be quickly fixable with a deep weld.

easy / affordable option might be to buy a used / race frame...and swap everything over. Im not sure how strong a weld would be....or how it might hold up over time either....

Might be about 10-15 hours to drop the motor...forks...wheels...electrical....swing arm/ shock etc etc....

Drill a 7/64" hole at the end of the crack asap to prevent the crack from getting larger/spreading....

Who safety'd the bike when you bought it? If it existed with the previous owner, it should not have gone unnoticed.

Nah..most mechanics wouldn't remove the tank. If it was concealed well enough they wouldn't notice. Besides, we all know there are mechanics safety things without looking at them.

That only happens to GSXR's

Ive ridden for a long time with cracked frames, before I noticed they were even cracked...

More then once did it take a motor swap to notice they were cracked

In the other thread the OP started he said that the seller is a mechanic and saftied it himself.....

I am not sure if he is a mechanic but he said he used to work for bmw of the DVP and currently is a tech at Kahuna and I did pick up safety and ownership from him while he was at work. so yea..

I would talk to who ever put there name on the safety certificate. They might not want the Ministry up their butt about their safety inspection procedures ...

Problem with that is they can easily say the crack must have formed after the safety was done...

He should have cleaned the paint off around the area before welding. You can see the paint has contaminated that weld.....That might hold for a while, but it will eventually crack through the weld...I have seen it many times...

congrats....you just made that crack worse.....and you cant even see the other side.....
NOT a good fix by any means...ride in fear..
