Coverage for leathers and helmet?

Hi all,

Looking to get some info here on insurance, do bike insurer typically cover helmet or riding gear, due to damage/crash or stolen off bike. Thx

Hi, I think they would not cover the helmet. You would have to claim the helmet under your house policy. So essentially you would be filing two claims but you would only pay one deductible and that is usually the highest deductible. I am not a claims expert but I think that's how it would be.

Really?! I fully understand that say when you have your car broken into on your driveway and contents are stolen that it would be covered under the house policy, but the house policy would apply on the helmet in a motorcycle collision? That's an interesting situation. What's the reasoning behind that if you know?

Motorcycle insurance will cover the helmet cost/replacement; Your home/apt/house insurance will cover the costs for the remainder of your gear. They are covered under the contents portion of your premium. I recently had an accident and this is how I recovered my loss for everything.

Helmet and gear is covered if you crashed with them.
I had my helmet & jacket replaced, and insurance covered the bill (within reason of course, you need to purchase replacement gear in the same price range).
If the gear is really old, they take depreciation into account and you get a percentage of the overall cost (well, that's how TD handled it).

From the experiences noted above, it sounds like a theft of helmet or clothing = coverage/claim under home insurance, while damage of helmet or clothing during a collision = coverage/claim under auto insurance (comprehensive coverage, if you pay for this.)

The reasoning behind it, is that because you are wearing it, it would be covered under contents on your home policy. I think I am going to call our claims department and find out for sure.

I see. Thanks for the explanation. If so, does that mean an action camera mounted to the bike would be covered under the vehicle insurance, and one mounted to your helmet would fall under home insurance?

Yes, as long as your policy covers it and helps if you can provide original receipts.

Lol at the insurance guy-seriously? Why post if you have no idea? Doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies with recommending Allstate.

State Farm replaced everything that was damaged when I claimed, even the bike-go figure, replacement costs are covered under the specific policy you signed up for.

Read your contract and keep your receipts.

I did say at the beginning that I am not in Claims. I also stated that I would ask someone from claims. And I did. He did say that usually if you were in an accident and your helmet got damaged, they would more than likely cover it. As for other protective gear, most likely it would be covered. But the discretion is up to the adjuster at the end of the day.

meme- We know different people have different experiences. So my stating that I would find out is a lot better than having people guess as to what their insurance company would do. If I don't know something, then me an insurance agent is not to pretend to know and then give someone the wrong advice. My job is also involves little when it comes to claims. So when someone has a question like this, I try to find out, because you never know, I might have client one day with the same question, and now that I have done the research and asked a claim specialist I can confidently give a proper answer. We all learn. I enjoy reading your questions, and even though not everyone of you may be my client, that doesn't mean that someone in my field should not try to assist, and at least help you guys make better decisions. Sorry if this came off as rant, that was not my intention. I am passionate about this I guess.

Like everyone says it depends on the company. Just make sure you actually have the gear you claim you crashed in. When I was at a shop getting a quote for my gear to be replaced they mentioned a guy who claimed he crashed in some high end leathers then panicked when his insurance company ask him to send in the rashed up leathers he didn't have lol. In the end I had to mail my insurance Co my crashed gear, kept the helmet as a souvenir.

Great advice if a person expects the insurer to pay for the damage gear, then it becomes property of the insurer, (they have paid you for it). It is at their discretion if they want to "take possession of it". Many take possession to ensure the rider doesn't again use the damaged gear and if they are in other claim get more injured due to gear failure. The gear is normally destroyed and disposed of by the insurer, (they don't sell it off to third party).
