Contour GPS VS GoPro Hero2

I just bought the GoPro Hero2, i used it for about 1h and have up to 2weeks to take it back to Best Buy.

Looking around the Countour GPS seems to be a better option.

GoPro seems good quality video but the interface sucks ***, it reminds me of programming a TIMEX watch. Its bulky and hard to tell what its doing at any particular time (recording/on off etc). More expensive of the two.

Contour has GPS (embedded meta data), bluetooth connection for Android/IPhone, you can buy a waterproof case and it has laser calibration. The design seems more stream line and the reviews seems to paint a nice picture.

Ive looked at quality comparison and they seem comparable, I will admit the GoPro has more options for stills, angles and preferences but its hard to config and i doubt i will use most of that.

Im leaning to return the GoPro and get the Contour GPS, any input from the wise and almighty forum?

Thanks

When i got it from BestBuy I had issues with GPS... by issues I mean it would never work.

hero2 has much better low light performance. keep it. yes the interface could be better but you get used to it.

The GPS wouldnt work? or the whole unit?

either way you returned it and got a refund or tried another?

I havent found complaints of mass defects of the product (did a quick review over the internet), although i did read something about the firmware needed to be upgraded to get the Bluetooth working properly.

Thanks for the feedback, i will hopefully collect it with others input to form an opinion.

Ive got a contour gps. I like it a lot. Very easy to use and i can see what video im taking on my phone. Easy to download and share video. Quality was good as well. I like the gps feature. Shows speed, location and elevation.

Contour has *LOUSY* sound quality. Anything over 20 km/h and all you hear is the wind noise (imagine the sound coming from an old TV set showing the snowy screen).
Bought the case for mine, no better.

GoPro's mounts are ridiculously cheap when compared to the Contour as well. $30 gets you a bag of mounts (GoPro) instead of 1 single one (Contour).

That being said, I have both cameras. Turn the sound recording off on the Contour and use the GoPro sound instead when making composite videos etc.

What is your settings for the guys who have the ContourHD?
I'm currently putting the Action 720p 60frames but it's eating the battery.
What do you guys choose? I plan to buy an extra battery..

I returned 3 contour cameras (2 contour + and 1 GPS) and retained the gopro 2 and Contour Roam. I got the 1st contour + with a non functioning battery , the 2nd + and the GPS came with missing lens screw. This is an obvious problem with their quality control. Never had problem with gopro except you need to carry a scewdriver to properly tighten the mount.

I was able to connect the contour+ with my iphone but never the GPS(i have the proper BT card). The video on the iphone is crap and you can only use for aiming the camera not for playback. In my opinion you will get a better deal getting a LCD backpack for gopro (playback and delete files)

Gopro comes waterproof, contour are only water resistant and to make the contour waterproof you need to buy a case and it will be much bulkier than the gopro. Only contour roam is waterproof up to 1meter without a case.

Contour lens (+, GPS, HD, flat lens with raised sides) attracts bug splat, it also collect water/road spray, and dust. Go pro with its concave lens repels everything except for a big juicy bug splat. Only the Contour Roam don't have the raised side and can shed rain.(Tip: stick a clear protector on the lens, I use a plastic film LCD protector).
Also GPS has 135 deg lens vs Roam and + 170deg vs Gopro 90, 127, and 170deg lens.

The rec slider for contour gps, + and HD are great but the on off button on the back is a PIA to use. You can't expect to turn it on/off with gloves on. I can at least turn my gopro on in 1 button on/off mode with gloves on. The easiest to use is the Contour Roam, the on/rec/off is controlled with the slider only.

I can mount the contour easily (flex strap mount) and they look great vs the gopro brick.
Video quality the gopro wins, hands down specially with low light condition.
My comparison at http://youtu.be/1N5NoimqQT8, video was taken at sunset, please skip the sledding part :) to see the camera facing the opposite direction. Even with less sun gopro still gets more light.

You can change recording mode with gopro anytime, Contour +, GPS you can switch between set 2 preset modes or change with iPhone (if it connects).
You will need a computer to change the setting for Roam.

So far I'm happy with my gopro2 for its ruggedness, quality and bang for the buck and Contour Roam for its ease of use. I use the Roam 4x more than the gopro.

Bestbuy were selling contour HD yesterday for 69$ but price changed to 99$ after an hour.

Or the Replay XD1080, as a fourth.

I think this is the best option for a bullet form factor. Good audio, good video, good controls, less extreme FOV. If it used SD instead of microSD I would've got one instead of my Hero2.

how about the drift? I'm thinking that would be an even better helmet cam
