considering what to do next year

I've been doing the racer5 cbr125 course/races this summer because I really wanted to get into motorcycle racing, and I still do.
My initial plan was to do this to get my feet wet and then come out next year on a 600, but I am starting to think that may not be the best decision financially for myself at the moment. The lease on my car expires this christmas and I will either buy out the car (I walked into the lease a few months ago, so it woudlnt be too terrible to buy it out), or purchase another one, both of which would be fairly significant expenses for the year.

For those that do not know, I don't drive on the street, I never have and I don't really plan to, and these cbr125s are pretty much the first bikes I've ever ridden. While I have been going fast on the track and keeping up and doing well, I kind of feel like I dont have everything fully "in sync" to the point where I am not even thinking about what I am doing, and I know this comes with just experience. I've had a few close calls and I actually dumped the bike at mosport this weekend because I pretty much had a moment where my mind lapsed and I kind of froze up. I went in way too hot and was too far to the inside, came to the top of turn 5 and was pretty much pointed at the kitty litter, Im sure there are a multitude of ways I could have approached the situation at the top of the hill, but I ran into the litter and down I went. I certainly don't want that happening on a 600 at 160mph (not that you'd be going into mosses that fast.. but I digress). I am not really scared or anything, the fact that I dumped the bike doesnt scare me, I actually dont think I smiled so hard all weekend haha.

So I've been toying with the idea of continuing to do the racer5 thing next year, and grabbing a dirt bike so that I can fill my weekends up with riding and really become comfortable with the two different riding styles, and use them to my advantage. Plus with the dirt bike I will still need to get a trailer and all other associated things for hauling, riding and working on a bike so that the next year when I do get my 600 race bike, it wont be as big of a hit to the pocket and Ill just be buying a bike and tires.

Would I be a pussy to push my dream out another year? I think the dirt experience would be pretty good for me, as I know most of the top riders all come from the dirt. I'm just thinking that with the money I'd spend to do 6~ races on a 600 for a season, I could spend half and be on the trails ALL season long and gain so much more riding experience. Plus, I'd have a sweet pit bike the season after...

What say you?

slow and steady....whats the rush....you have your whole life to get better at SOME sport.....relax and enjoy it

I rented from turn 2 for 2 years to find out what bike was right for me.....and IF track was where I wanted to go

thank god I didnt listen to anyone hanging around TMP back then...

Haha, care to elaborate?

There is no rush really, its just my inner competitive devil saying "everyone is getting another years leg up on you". Which I know is pointless because I wont ever make it to motogp or world superbike, let alone I guess even a pro series. Am600 championship is my ultimate realistic goal, if I reach that then we'll see where things go :)

Some ride for fun, some ride for the trophies. How deep are your pockets?

Is the only bike you've ever ridden a CBR125?

Not deep enough! haha

prior to the 125s I'd ridden a dirt bike less than a handful of times in my life, so I'd say yeah its the only bike. I've less than 10h total seat time, all time on the track. I'll be at grand bend in sept, and maybe in october, so I will have 3-4 race weekends under my belt this season..

I ride first for fun, second for knowing I rode better than someone else and the trophies.

There is plenty of middle ground between a cbr125 and a modern 600.

Vintage (of which there are a ton more divisions within that), SV650, "Lost Era" or "Sportsman" or whatever else you want to call it (10 to 12+ year old sport bikes), supermotards, 125 Grand Prix, etc.

My vote: buy an EX500 or RZ350 or FZR400 and run SOAR Vintage; we need more competitors in that class ...

+1 to Brianp, starting off with the older classes typically are less hectic and cheaper to run.

If you are at Grand bend on the Friday before round 5 buy me a large DD and i'll let you do a few laps on my old lost era bike.

You really want me in vintage don't you brian?

Perhaps I'll take a better look at them when Im there for round 5.. How many guys are there currently?

At the end of the day I enjoy going around a track as fast as I can on whatever bike I am on more than anything.
