Confusion in steps of buying a bike

I don't know if this sounds stupid, but lets assume this: I already have my M1, contacted insurance companies for the quote and let them know which bike I am getting, now my question is,

When I go to pick up the bike should I make two trips (its really far away, over an hour), one to inspect and check out the bike, and then go to MTO to get my name registered/and get a plate and THEN go pick it up? or is it possible that I can make one trip, and be able to drive the bike back and then do all the plating and registration afterwards?

Im just asking because it would be a huge hassle to drive a total of 4 hours just to be able to ride it on the way back, hopefully this question makes sense and I'm just wondering what y'all did or what the procedure was

P.S. yes I read the sticky but I wasn't clear on which step comes first, picking up the bike, or doing the plating/registration

When I bought my first (and current) bike I actually asked the seller for the VIN and called my insurance and had it insured when I went to look at it. I was pretty much going to buy it anyway so it worked out. Then the person I was with drove me to the nearest MTO where I transferred the ownership and got plates for it as well as a temporary sticker. Rode it right home. :) I got it safetied later that week, hope this helps.

lol that is my commute to work one way

Yes, I didn't help at all

If your confident on your skills, and all the right variables are there, then it's possible, probably best to have a buddy drive with you just in case, but here:

1 get insurance, explain your situation, give them the vin and everything they need, then get your pink slip

2 visit dude and pay for bike, exchange papers, leave bike there

2 go to local mto, register bike, get plates and temp sticker ( or hand in valid safety)

3 go back to bike, slap plates and temp sticker on and drive to your mech

4 get safetied,

5 take safety to mto and get regular sticker

The part with insurance might be tricky, they might ask for the ownership under your name, so your probably better off going through a broker who can hook you up. This isn't for sure btw, take this with a grain of salt but this is how I would do it if I want to get riding ASAP.

Regardless of all this, I would not recommend taking a long ride on a first, unsafetied bike. Being a new m1 driver , you are also limited to the backroads.

What bike is it?

Wow..duh, that seems like the most efficient way to do it, the nearest MTO office is like 10 minutes away from his place so it shouldn't be too crazy to get it done and go back. the bike is a 08 Suzuki GS 500F, got a good quote on it and only a couple hundred more than the Ninja 250. I think I'm gonna take my other bud up there with me and have him ride it for the way back since he has his M2.

thanks for the help man!

Just make sure you know the hours to that local Service Ontario--some close earlier than others, and be sure to give yourself a healthy 2-hour window as lines can range from a handful of people at 2pm one day, to lining out the door at 2pm the next day at most places.

Having bought a P.O.S I would never get everything in order before buying a new bike, other then the insurance quote. I asked the seller for the vin, and got the quote over the phone. Bought the bike, went back 3 days later (easter weekend) with a new plate (which is destroyed almost already, squishy shock I think) and temp sticker, rode to rosie toes, and had the SSC in half hour (for 40 bucks!) then back to mto and 42 dollars later I have the full sticker. The way your going to do things sounds legit though, easier for your buddy to ride it back, with no restrictions.

why not have the seller drop it off at your place? or at the mechanics where to get the safety?

Should be stickies for new riders as a general guideline for this type of question! Nice post

^ that's the best way if you want to ride it asap. I decided to trailer it back and then when I got time I got it registered and satisfied, this way I didn't need a temp sticker. the only caution I would have is if you do insure the bike before buying it, make sure that isn't a factor in buying that particular bike if something seems odd with it. just make sure the insurance company doesnt have some stupid policy where you cant cancel it within a certain period of time (might be some law in accordance with this, not sure).
