CO2 Fire Extinguisher

Hey Everyone,

Like many of you, I tinker on my motorcycle in my garage.

I am looking for a CO2 Fire Extinguisher, just in case something goes wrong.

For the people who have one, where did you get it? They don't seem to be available in any of the big box stores.

If you call the private companies, they are about +$350.

If anyone can recommend a place where I can get one below that price, I would greatly appreciate it.

Got what I think is an expired ABC chemical one, from someone who used to service them.

In the exceptionally small chance you need one, wouldn't the mess from a traditional extinguisher be secondary to the realty that the fire is out?

The lack of mess is the only real advantage I see from C02 based extinguishers?

You do have a point. It's the concept of less clean up, that is appealing. I guess I could continue to use my current normal extinguisher.

I personally would stick with a normal ABC one for a fraction of the price.

What’re you doing to the bike that requires a ready fire extinguisher.

Having a fire extinguisher is a good idea for anybody who does their own wrenching

A dry chemical extinguisher is messy AND you should never spray a running motor with one because the dry chemical gets in behind the rings and if you want to use the motor again you have to take the motor apart and wash every part.
... but then you shouldn't have a running motor in a closed garage... for the same reason you shouldn't use a CO2 extinguisher in a closed garage ... YOU GONNA DIE
OP: If you REALLY want a CO2 extinguisher; go down to the welding supply store and buy a big bottle of CO2. Is cheap, the bottle is the biggest expense.

"Having a fire extinguisher is a good idea for anybody who" has stuff that they don't want to burn.
Knowing how to use one is a good idea too. If you ask nicely at the local firehall, they'll teach you... they love that ****.

Another vote for ABC. C02 without an oxygen monitor is life threatening. What if someone is monkeying around in your garage and discharges it without telling you (kid or annoying friend)? Atmosphere in the garage could be deadly and you have no idea.

FWIW, I've lost count of the extinguishers in the garage. One by each man door, a couple in each front corner near the overhead doors, one at the workbench and a few more at the back. If I need one, I really need one (or more) right now and am not interested in running around trying to put my hands on one. I've only needed one once and it was outside when a propane torch started furiously burning between the tank and torch head (cork seal was old). Most of them are getting up in age but gauge shows good and I shake the hell out of them every year to keep the powder from being a chunk. Every couple years I buy a new one for the house (either beside the stove or beside the furnace room) and move the retired one to the garage.

You don't need to buy new extinguishers, they can be refilled... IIRC I last paid $15 each for 10#.

Us human react to CO2 in higher concentrations. If the room is full of CO2, you'll gag and choke and gasp.
Any other gases we use, nitrogen, argon, helium etc etc, you just fall asleep and wake up dead. AFIK we only react to CO or CO2

Where ?

btw, October is Fire Safety month. Walk into any fire station and ask them anything. Like bitzz said, they love that ****.

btw2, they dont know where to refill extinguishers.

You're right, I forgot, CO2 turns to carbonic acid in your lungs and triggers your urge to breathe. Where I dealt with inert gas fire extinguishers in the past, they were in sealed rooms that alarmed and allowed exit time prior to flooding the room. Concentrations went very high, very fast and the atmosphere did not support life.

We don't really react to CO. It bonds to hemoglobin, we get red lips and then it's lights out. Worse than Nitrogen/argon/helium etc as they don't bond. Still lights out with those, but moving you to fresh air while you are still breathing and you can recover quickly. CO stays bonded for a while so your blood doesn't work well.

Places like Robertson Fire Equipment will recharge older cylinders. However when I checked approx 5 years ago a new one was $50 and a refill was $45….I bought all new for our building.

The old ones are sitting at the cottage in case needed and still are in the green zone.

fire extinguisher is one of those things you never need , right up until you do. Get one or two ABC, put it where you can reach it and have a plan.

a 3lb ABC extinguisher saved my life once so I'm a bit paranoid about fire .

Printing company i worked for in Waterloo had a press that would catch fire at least weekly. (uv drier tunnel) Plant manager gave me a memo with the outrageous cost of the extinguishers we were going thru. I took the new ones into his office with a note. Keep these here.$$$$.
Couple years after i left, a fire destroyed the press. $3m damage.

How can anyone be this stupid? Also I'm not a fire code expert but this feels illegal to me

Not sure that I'd admit that if I were you.
