So my bike makes a clicking noise but its only there when I turn the throttle and I am in gear putting along. When I let go of the throttle or pull in the clutch the sound disappears. I also don't get the sound at idle or when revving at idle.
It's a consistent pace that does not appear to be affected by speed.
What's the make/model/year of the bike? My guess, without knowing much more, is the cam chain tensioner. I had one fail on a 2008 Ninja 250, and it was similar symptoms.

Try and distinguish the type of noise. A clicking (as in high frequency noise like tapping a hardened piece of metal) or is it a clacking noise like if you are tapping a thinner less dense material like Aluminium. A click could indicate valves depending where on the engine it's coming from a clacking noise (top right side of the engine) would make me think CCT as it is probably the cam chain impacting the housing material.
BTW do not let this go too long, a camchain that skips can and probably will screw a valve. As well, if you damage your Cam chain and need it changed, the process requires that you remove the engine and break the block as the housing is cast as part of the block and there's no room to get the chain out without splitting the block..this means...$$$ or a search for a good used engine online
It's a 2012 klr 650 with about 6000 kms. It's coming from the left side as I hear it when passing cars or walls on my left. Does a cam chain not turn even when at idle though? It's weird to me that it only happens when I have the throttle engaged.
I also had an 84 nighthawk which the Cct broke and it sounded like absolute **** and ran like a pig.
My bike still starts and runs smoothly with no surging.

You're in luck... you have 2 chains in there One is your cam chain, the other is your counter balancer chain. The cam chain and tensioner rarely has issues. Have you ever gotten your Doo done? If you haven't, have you been making sure you loosened the nut at the bottom left side, under the rubber cap (2 turns only, then re-seat gently)? This allows your stock Doo to take up the slack in the counter balancer chain. If you're doing all that correctly, then I'd be worried and bring it to a mechanic.
It is. It's just I am heading out to Collingwood tomorrow and don't have time to get it to the dealer. I was hoping to get an idea if its something really serious as klrs have been known to have the doohicky failures. But I got it over to cyclewerx and had the guy ride it. He seems to think its just a loose chain and when I accelerate the tightening across the top is creating a tick on the loose bottom. So I will get it adjusted when I come back and get my full 6000km service when I return.
