Claiming motorcycle gear

I'm curious as I have been told gear is treated like a bike itself and is covered by insurance.

Has anyone made a claim for motorcycle gear? How is the process handled?
I know if you have the original receipt or new receipt they go with that but what if your gear was purchased years ago so the receipt is long gone and you are not looking to get new gear?

From someone in the einsurance industry in another thread:

Your gear is covered by accident benefits. Everything from your jacket to your underwear. Your backpack and laptop is covered, but under your home owners insurance / content insurance. Your helmet is covered under the property damage / auto portion of the claim.

Did you get in to a motorcycle accident?

When you told your insurance company this they should've asked you about your gear, typically you have one year from the date of the claim to submit your receipts for reimbursement (at least that's how State Farm deals with it).

I had no receipts for my gear when I crashed my bike and Kingsway wouldn't accept online links. So I went to Sturgess Cycle in Hamilton and explained the situation. I had bought my boots there, but everything else was ebay, bike show and a Bike shop that closed the year before.

They gave me a quote for the replacement of my gear and I submitted that and was paid out for everything but my helmet, for that for whatever reason they would only give me 50% of the quote.

What was funny though was when I was getting the quote at Sturgess before he handed me the receipt he asked " you do have this gear right?" (I did) Then told me how someone got a quote for replacing his high end spyke suit, submitted his quote and panicked when his insurance company said no problem, mail us the suit and we'll cut you a check.

And yes Kingsway paid for me to ship my jacket, pants, boots and gloves to them before they cut me a check. They let me keep my helmet but asked that I cut the strap so no one could use it.

In the past, when I've had to make a claim, the gear was treated as clothing. When I didn't have receipts (after all, who really saves them?), quotes from a motorcycle shop were good enough.

If you're at fault it will be covered under the Accident Benefits portion of your policy. If you're not at fault it will be covered under section 6 Direct Compensation Property Damage (assuming your accident fits the DCPD criteria). If it's a collision with an uninsured motorist and you're not at fault the gear is covered under Section 5 Uninsured motorist coverage.

Hmm good to know (bookmarked in case it is ever needed) -- I'm currently upgrading all my gear (slowly) with high/higher-end pieces, so it's nice to know should I ever go down insurance will cover me to replace it.

^This was pretty much experience last year. Helmet covered as if it were part of the bike. The jacket and other gear I could claim separately but never ended up doing so as they were still good and I felt I received a fair payout as it was.
