Hey everyone,

So it finally happened... I was following a car tonight on the way home and next thing I know, Im seeing fireworks? The driver ahead of me flicked her smoke out the window and some how it managed to hit my full face, which I normally have my shield up but since I forgot my clear glasses I had it down. Then the passenger tossed hers out, thankfully it missed me. I've heard of stories like this happening but I have never experienced it..... I don't like it.

I decided next red light I was going to say something. Go figure, we get 3 lights and they turned green just as I went to pull up to their window. Finally we got a fresh red light, so I pulled up.

Me-Hi ladies, can I ask a favor?

Ladies- sure? (with a puzzled look)

Me- I then explained what happened and told them how dangerous it could be. Explained how lucky it was that I had my visor down as it would have hit me in the face. I even stuck up for the choppers and explained that a lot of them ride with half helmets leaving their faces exposed.

Ladies- Apologized profusely and said they never even thought about it.

I then thanked them for hearing me out just as the light turned green.

This got me thinking as I rode the rest of the way home, how many people don't realize what happens when they toss their smokes out the window. Which got me paying more attention and I saw 3 more cars toss their smokes out their windows.

Now I was thinking about making up a few posters to stick up at work, which happens to be a hospital. But I can't find any pictures of cigarettes hitting helmets or glass.... Not surprised by this but I was wondering if anyone else has any pictures that may help me out?

It bothers me enough just inhaling smoke from people who are puffing away in their cars; can't say I've ever had this happen.

But I don't understand how people think they can just toss their butts on the ground or out their window. They're garbage and should be disposed of properly. I'd love to see police hand out littering tickets rather than speeding tickets. I suppose one can dream...
 
I don't mind the cigarettes. but recently someone threw out a half full bottle of water.
 
Siggarettes..... bottles of water.... try a handfull of snott in your visor.....

People are pigs by nature... want litter regulated country, go germany or japan....

And yes. I did have a big fat fk spit out the window on my way to hamilton... it wasn't pleasant
 
ya ive had one hit my jacket but never my helmet, the worst thing ive had happen was when i pulled my visor up a bee ended up inside my helmet and i nearly wiped out...thankfully the bee got out within like 2 seconds.
 
good for you op! for keeping your cool and not road raging on them!

I've had a cigarette hit my visor before as well as my helmet. I've also had a burrito thrown out the car window in front of me and it hit my leg.
 
Cigarettes, beer cans, bees etc., are just some of the hazards we face. I wear a half helmet and know what you are talking about. Ashes from a flicked cigarette some how managed to get into my eyes last week and the feeling was not pleasant. Needless to say there was no confrontation - two tons of car vs. my bike was not going to happen, so I just gave the tool extra space. Glad you are ok though.
 
Had a couple in the last few nights with smokes bouncing around in front of me on the slab - easy to see at night - kinda hard to have a educational lesson at 140 on the 401 :(
 
I wouldn't expect that a smoker is thinking about their actions in any fashion.
 
I too recently had this happen. At the last second i saw it so a quick swerve to miss. Well the lady saw this and if her hand could talk it apologized a million times. It's funny though, as riders how much more aware we become
Of things we would have never been if we just drove a car.
I find myself so much more alert in my car just from riding. Looking for things I would have never before.

This bee think happened to me, only thing is it was a wasp, opened visor asap and it few out. Use your own god damn wings!
 
Unfortunately people, in general, are just bloody vacant when it comes to this sort of thing. When it comes to smokers, who would ever think that throwing a piece of smouldering garbage out a moving car window could ever be acceptable? I've had that cigarette butt meets visor spark show on several occasions and it's definitely disconcerting to have that flash go off at night.
 
Don't ride behind pig trucks on their way to the slaughterhouse. The pigs are upset and evacuate their bowels like hippies on a binge.

If people would at least butt their cigarettes out, it wouldn't be so bad.
There have been thousands of ads about people starting fires that way, and some may have even been charged, but nobody seems to listen.
 
I've been trying to catch the cigs people throw for years. One day it will happen and it's going right back in the car.
 
OP you did the right thing. Despite it all, they meant no harm and now they know better and will probably tell this story to somebody as well.
 
It is just part of riding. Is it good? no. But if you try and talk to every single person who does something wrong against motorcycling, well you will spend more time talking then riding. Its unavoidable. Just be happy no harm came of it and go about your day, I would not bother with something small like that.
