Colour me impressed.

Anybody own/try a Google Chromebook?

What an incredible device for something in the mid-upper $200 range (US dollars)

I am typing this message from one right now in the US. What a snappy little machine with a wonderful display and Apple quality trackpad. Very responsive!

Impressive quality, compact and light, stylish, bright vivid display, keyboard and trackpad for this kind of money.

Some models even have touch display. Neat.

If you love keyboards and bang off a lot of emails or wordy messages, and spend most of your time cruising the net, and/or using google apps and doing basic computer tasks, check this baby out!

Its a great device for people who don't use any features on a computer other than internet and email(i think is most people) and people who like google tracking their everymove. But to me the OS is unfinished it feels like a beta product (and in many ways it is) with some refinement i would be interested in the uptake. To be honest i think i would rather see them develop a version on android for it.

Their more expensive chrome books with the touch screen are quite frankly a waste of money.

What blew me away, was when I think of how my macbook is used, 95+% of the time its used for email and web surfing. and it cost me a pile of money.

Had I tried a Chromebook earlier, I seriously would have considered it. It's a frigging fifth of the cost of a macbook, and I couldn't believe how precise the trackpad worked (I'm telling you, Apple quality), how good the keyboard felt, how snappy and quick everything functioned and downloaded, how light and good it felt, and how sharp the display was.

I'd never use it as "serious" computer, and that wouldn't bother me, as my late model desktop can handle all the "heavy lifting" type work I would need such as photos and such for the other 5% of the time a "real" computer would be necessary.

Edit : did some poking around on the net when I got home. This is the model I tested. Note the reviewers comments about the trackpad, the display and the keyboard. Shame its an HP product, its long term quality would worry me.

Look into Android x86 project.
I have it setup on my Acer netbook and it is better than Chromebook.
They have JB 4.3 but I am using ICS since it's more compatible to my netbook.

I am impressed with it. Perfect for a netbook or laptop. Perfect for older people or kids too.
Add Google Drive and Google Office app and you are set.

You can test with your laptop with bootable usb iso image.

This thing rocks and it is FAST, uses external mouse too :)
This on a netbook with 2gb ram and a SSD hard drive (only need a small SSD) and it will fly plus your battery life will last a very long time.

try ittttttttttt

i just put it on a netbook. Yea i defiantly has its uses as a bare bones Web/Email platform. The fast boot its quite cool.

IMO, the Chromebook is a bit ahead of it's time. Once google fiber is available everywhere, and download speeds are lightening fast - cloud computing is already here..

ditch chromium this works great

I am still partial to the Android x86 because it gives you what you want and you have access to the apps.
I look at my netbook and I see a widget for my gmail, a widget for weather, a widget of calendar and to do's, widget for making notes. I have a widget for my google drive and also quick office. Also I have the Google now widget setup on one of my screens so I can see the traffic info for my route. I don't have to go clicking around, it's all setup like a dashboard ready to go. This is a great idea for kids and seniors too imo... If you use Nova Launcher you can lock the desktop so they can't remove or add anything.

I don't have to click anything because everything is automatically updated. I just click the browser I want. Dolphin Browser and Opera work well. Opera (not classic) plays flash. Dolphin + the jetpack add on is fast.

If I had a ssd drive this netbook would be super fast plus the battery life would just be that much better.
Lubuntu is easy to instal, easier than Windows7. It's fast too, look around Youtube for other videos of it.

Enjoy!

So I'm in the market for a laptop. Portability is up there on the list. All I need is a USB port so all the other stuff doesn't matter to me. That said for the price am I better to get a lower end windows laptop or would a chromebook work? I was specifically looking at the hp 14" version of chromebook

i'm going x86 try that next. I don't actually have a use at this time for a netbook so i'm just playing. I have had all kinds on unbuntu installs over the years. Web servers, FTP servers, Domain and file servers. Its my favorite unix flavour.

MAke sure you get the proper x86 iso...tell me what machine you are using.

Also, Elementary OS is pretty damn impressive.
It looks fantastic and easy to use.

This is my suggestion.
Buy a dual core Netbook for $100-$150 from Craigs list. Install Elementary OS and call it a day, you will be impressed.
Upgrade that netbook to 2gb ram and IF you want splurge on a SSD (you only need 60gb or 120gb if you want to carry music and movies). You do not need the newest SSD buy the older model because the netbooks do not support the speed of the newest SSD's.
