Check out our 3D Scanner!

Not sure if any of you are interested in 3D printing or scanning, but I just launched an indiegogo project with my friend Drew (monster 620) 48 hours ago.

SO I'M GOING TO DO A SHAMELESS PLUG.

I dream of one day just downloading and printing new fairings on a whim so I'm hoping one day my geek dreams and ride dreams will come together and make sweet sweet love.

it's $349 and our closet competitor is $3500 currently (the scanner jay leno uses in his garage to help make replacement parts he can't find for older cars). We launch in august but we're doing pre-orders on indiegogo to try and make it happen.

I'm not counting doing scans with kinect because for small objects the kinect doesn't work well enough.

cheers!

Awesome work man! I'd buy one if I could justify it. There've been a few situations where having one of these paired with a 3D printer would've been useful. My cousin is a 3D modeler/animator so I'll show him this.

This thread has introduced me to this phenomenon. I had never even heard of 3D printing before, but the possibilities are endless! Wow. Good luck guys!

I have access to a Cognitens wls400 and I use it almost daily. Look it up it is a awesome scanner with a price tag of $280000us.

Thanks guys! ;D

Nice!!! i saw some pretty neat tripod based room scanners when I took a tour of toronto forensics last year and got to talk to the guy that operates them. pretty gorry stuff it's used for but really cool tech.

what do you do?
I'll never be able to afford something like what you posted but the concept of it actually looks really simple. white light scanning or laser, same basic idea, then just add an arm with position feedback so it knows where you've moved it. I've thought about doing a movable arm + scanner combo. and it wouldn't cost $280,000..

I am a Tool and Die maker by trade but I moved into the quality department. I use the scanner to verify machining and reverse engineer tools. I also do build studies in assembly lines and other weird things like that. I also have a automated measurement cell that I program.

We used Leica scanners to do aircraft at Bombardier.
Other kinds to do cars, and also whitelight scans.

3D printing will revolutionized our lives, it wouldnt just make our lives much easier, but it would also kill a lot of small businesses.
Politicians will get their panties in a knot because you can print parts for guns. I'm sure printing a whole gun is not too far fetched, guns like the 1911 which have no patents on them and their design is free for all, will make them available to every Tom, Dick & Harry.

I've been following this technology for a bit. Really curious on what will happen.

Sorry to threadjack, lol

Any links you could share with someone looking to get into it also?

Just some websites that I can start researching different types of printers.

I've just been reading news article & general info. I wont know about that

AFAIK there are three main types

1) Uses plastic wire (think weed wacker string) in what is essentially a hot glue gun to build the part. As the part is built from one face, undercuts are not possible. The plastic string is quite expensive, so there was a contest to make a cheap machine to convert bulk plastic pellets (like would be used in an extruder) into string. This type can change colours/materials by having different types of string loaded.

2) Uses fine plastic or metal (looks like sand) and something like a laser to melt/sinter the material. For each new layer, the stage with the part on it drops a little and then vibrates so the top of the part is covered. Some of these allow the creation of undercut or interlinked parts (like chain). Obviously single colour/material.

3) Like 2 but uses a chemical binder to glue the material together.

Makerbot is a good search term to start with for the at-home stuff. The expensive stuff is built by z-corp and others.
