Changed magneto gasket and oil, bike not starting

I have a GS500F 2008. The magneto gasket which is after the sprocket section had a leak, so finally after a month of leaking and topping up i decided to change it. It took me a few hours to do everything as this was my 1st time changing oil and gasket. So i drained the oil, took out the filter and then took out the sprocket cover and then the magneto gasket cover, scrapped the **** out of the old gasket, replaced it with a new one, tightened all the screws, put the spocket cover back, put the new filter in and screwed all the bolts and nuts. Topped it up with oil and now the bike wont start. I hear a loud spinning sound by where i replaced my gasket. The bike will bump start but then if i turn it off it goes back to its original condition. I didnt play with any wires etc, cant remember anything except putting a cog which moved out when i pulled the gasket cover off. Any idea what can that be? I am essentially stuck at work around yonge and stclair with this problem. HELP!!

That would be the starter gear.. I suspect you didn't replace it correctly and now the start cannot engage correctly.

i drained the oil and took the magneto gasket part apart. I see the cog which got pulled out during my 1st time pulling out the cover isnt aligning with the other 2 cogs( one big one small). So is there a special position for it to be put in?

what does the repair manual say?

what does the repair manual say?

The cog had a rod and apparently it dropped into the oil pan so i never saw it and thought the cog just adjusts btw 2 other cogs. Upon checking the manual i the problem and sort of figured it out where could it be. Damn i am exhausted, 10 hours of work while fasting.......Learning curves they say :p

I had the same problem with my starter spinning freely but not engaging. It ended up being a loose crank bolt which allowed the engine gears to be mis-aligned with the starter gears.
