Chain rusted

So I moved to a new apt building and had to park outside a few times. Long story short, my bike got rained on and now it's rusting. My mechanic advised me about changing it before it rusted through. Annnnnd... I didn't lol. So now my bike's been parked for the last week since I went to NY and when I got back there was very visible rust. To get to my mechanic it's about a 10 km ride. I'm just wondering if it's possible to ride the bike there to get the chain replaced. Is it insanely dangerous? Will riding it on a rusty chain hurt the bike?

I highly doubt in a week it would be rusted right through, I would take some kerosene and scrub it and see how much you can get off and be able to fully inspect the chain.

It's most likely surface rust. Don't even bother to replace it. Clean the chain with some WD-40 or Kerosene and then lube it up and it will be fine.

Post up some pictures of the chain if you can so we can better judge it.

never seen a rusted through chain and I've seen some chains that haven't been touched in 20+ years.
I would ride it to the shop but very slowly. I would replace it too but I'm the type of person to change my chain regardless every 20-25k max and clean and lube it every 400-600km.

If it is an O or X ring it's most likely surface rust.

Clean it with kerosene, lube it well and monitor it for seized links. Roll the bike in neutral, seized links won't deflect.

If there aren't any, ride, inspect and repeat.

This is coming from a guy on a budget who rode with crappy rk racing chain until I learned about the beauty of DID VM2 X ring. :-D

I wouldn't worry about it. Ronnie gave you a good rundown. You can also lift up the rear end, slowly turn the wheel and inspect if there are any seized links. If there are none, just clean and lube.

all the advice was good? oh and start looking for another mechanic if he wanted to replace the chain without looking at it first imo

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll clean it and inspect it for seized links for now. If rust becomes a recurring problem i'll probably replace it mind you.

Spray Kerosene on it, and than use a brush. Afterwards use a rag to wipe up the excess crap.

Set it up on the rear stand, and run it for a few minutes. Than use Dupont Teflon lube on it, and you shouldnt see this problem in the near future.
Good pointer about looking for bad links etc ..
Bad pointer .. do NOT use WD 40 as someone else mentioned.
