CBR 600RR Starting Problems

Hi All,

Wondering if I could get some help. I did a search and couldn’t really find anything, my apologies if there is thread on this already.

I'm having issues starting my 2004 CBR600rr. It has 12,000 km's on it and completely stocked. I bought the bike used last year and never had issues starting it in the past. I actually started it a few times this winter and rode it into work a couple of weeks ago. Last time I started it was 1 week ago, didn’t move it just started the bike.

First, I needed a battery as the original was pretty much dead. If I charged it, she would start but if left for more than a week it wouldn’t start. I boosted it a couple of times and needed to keep taking it back up to my condo to charge if I wanted to go for a ride.

Last time I started it, it was with the old battery. I bought a new battery from CT and she hasn’t been able to start since. I figured, must be a faulty battery, so I put in my friends battery (2003 CBR600rr) and still won’t start my bike (his starts fine with that battery). The bike turns over but doesn't start. I checked the fuse by the seat, looks good. Checked the fuses inside the front left fearing..They all look good. Bike primes (I hear it) but dent catch. One thing to note, I get smoke coming out of the tail pipe.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

did you put fuel stabilizer in the winter? fuel lines can be clogged..

Over primed? My 07 did the same thing as i was rewiring my tail lights. I kept on turning on the bike and it kept priming(maybe like 15 times). I had to hold the throttle half way or something and hold the starter for like 10 seconds. I'll check the manual when I get home and you could try those steps. Standby.

I believe its WOT while cranking for 10-20 sec bursts. DO NOT CYCLE THE KEY!

Get some seafoam, fresh gas and pour it in.

Than WOT ( wide open throttle) and crank it over. Same as ^^^ what he said.

It will eventually catch. You may kill your battery in the process if it is weak though.

Hi All,

Thank you for your suggestions so far. To answer some of the qustions.

Yes I did put fuel stabilizer in the winter. Though I did take to work one day (about a 20 km communte each way). How would i clean the fuel lines?

I've tried wide open throttle while cranking it over, but didnt hold it long for fear of burning the starter. Also kep truning the key on/off. I will try this again.

Put fresh gas in already. Havent tried seafoam. Will try WOT and crank it over for 10-20 second intervals.

-Bike turns over but doesn't start
-not a fast ticking sound while starting
-eliminated battery (purchased new battery)
-eliminated fuses
-gas stabilized

I would suggest to look at or just replace your spark plugs.

it would be difficult for gas to break down in 6 months even if not stabilized. It would not ignite as easily but it would start. Kind of ironic that gas is flammable but doesn't ignite as easily ;)

other possible causes
-fuel filter is clogged but it would probably start then die or surge and die
-electrical but unlikely as you can jump the bike.

In my opinion you have eliminated a lot, start with the plugs and eliminate them also before checking the fuel filter, draining the tank etc.

Thanks for the response. I will try WOT again tonight, if that dosent work I will then check the plugs.

UPDATE - I followed WOT and held the starter for 5-10 secs and after about a half hour...she started!! I went for a quick 15 min ride to get everything out and all seems fine now. I went to a friens house and after about 45 mins, she started again with no issues or struggling. Thanks to all of you for your help!
