Cars and Insurance?

He's not kidding. P/up trucks and mini vans are lower b/c of the lower accident benefits exposure. You're less likely to be injured in an accident

Pick up truck or minivan lol... seriously!
Yeah, I was told by one of my insurance brokers that, in general, the larger the vehicle, the cheaper insurance.

My 2001 Jettas seemed cheap to insure back in the day but that may have been because I had been driving for a couple years by the time I got one.
My SAAB 900se is REALLY cheap with some companies and not with others. It's nice when this one is cheap since it's pretty quick.

toyota t100. cheapest vehicle i've ever found to insure.

Check out www.IIHS.org (insurance institute for highway safety) for REAL crash test results. They also have data on theft and claims by vehicle but you have to dig a little. For the most part ignore the star crash test ratings the US government does, they are stuck in the 50s technology wise (this is why IIHS retests every car!). Your insurance company will use the IIHS data. You will also be shocked to find that bigger does not always equate to safer!

To put this in perspective, we have two cars a Hyundai Accent ($12K new) and a Saab 9-5 ($50K new). The Saab is a year newer than the Hyundai, it is turbo charged, goes like stink, much more expensive to replace or repair. The Saab is also CHEAPER on insurance mostly because of low theft and good crash test results.

It is also a good site if you care about safety (like having your kids in the car). What I find is people talk about safety BUT when it comes down to it they will buy the car with the poor crash test results because it is shiny, has Bluetooth or $500 cheaper...

Talked to a guy last night paying $800/mth to insure his car..ouch..

Yeah..then they freak out if their child eats 2 specks of dirt or if there's 2 bits of dust from Fukushima in the air over Canada. Have some perspective people..your driving skillz are not nearly what you think they are!!

A great example of the IIHS testing: http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=67&seriesid=549

It is a minivan (so people bought it to hall the family and had a sense of safety from its size) and it had 4 star government crash test results. The IIHS found at city street speeds (I think they test around 40 mph closing speed but don't quote me) it severed the foot of the dummy and left little survivable space...
