Car rant

I don’t miss many of those things.

But I do miss proper dials, and buttons on newer cars. My car has buttons thankfully, but the button days are slowly going the way of the dodo bird.

I drive a '84 G body.
I am sorry but there is a reason they don't build cars like that anymore. They were BAD cars.

Modern cars are MUCH safer, MUCH more efficient and MUCH MUCH MUCH Greener.
A modern "cheap" car like a Kia or Hyundai outperforms anything built in the 80's... even "super cars" of that era (other than top speed).
Reminiscing is dangerous. We only remember the good stuff.
'60s cars needed a valve job at 30-50,000 km. A motor was LUCKY to last 160,000km. It had a three speed trans (if you ordered the upgrade otherwise you got 2 speeds) that shifted mechanically, that had to be replaced after about 50,000k... but that's academic as the body rotted off in 5 years... and the thing got 16 miles to the CANADIAN GALLON of gas.

... but then Chysler offered a Imperial, that weighed three tons, with a RECORD PLAYER. Spoiler: it didn't work very well.

I can't get inside the head of someone who misses CD changers and physical equalizer controls. Or a column shifted manual

Dials and buttons, absolutely. Non-automatic climate controls... I mean, ACC still isn't standard in a lot of cars, right? I like ACC but there are definitely people in the world who would be happier without it, I can appreciate that. The three knob arrangement was still semi common, I though. Mechanical climate controls that were strictly operated with vacuum motors and 15 cables can stay dead FOREVER, that **** was garbage.

A vehicle I consider nearly the pinnacle of good cabin design is a 2009 Silverado (no, I'm serious). Simple yet functional audio & climate controls, full physical instrumentation... fantastic visibility, the best headlights I've ever experienced on a passenger vehicle (and they're automatic!). Easily the worst part is the switch for the automatic interior lights. Good luck finding it if you've never encountered it before lol.

I would put full size spares on the list. Given how often I see people driving with compact spares on the highway it's incredible that they're even legal

@TwistedKestrel at least some cars still offer a dummy spare.

With weight saving pushes all around my Volt has an inflator instead of any type of spare.

If I didn’t need my trunk for my PPE I’d drive around with a winter tire as my spare (and vice versa for winter). Did it like that in the 2014 Volt.

But I need the space and can’t fit it all in that trunk.

Alot of talk about losing the column shifter... WHO CARES about the shifter.
When we got friggin air bags we lost the bench seat. No more middle seat for the girl friend to cozy up tight.
NOW she sits WAY over there, the other side of the shifter.

... teen age pregnancy was more of a problem then....

I really miss thin pillars (especially the A-pillars), hate having to weave my head around all the time just to see around the damn things. More cars should have OEM box flares/fender flares, they just make any car cooler IMO. Proper switches and buttons is definitely better than a touchscreen since you can change settings by feel only and not have to look down. The rest of the list is meh.

My truck is a Nissan Frontier. If you’ve ever seen the inside of one, the dash and centre console is pretty much straight out of the 90’s….so even though the truck is a 2016, it still has some of those things. That’s kind of what I like about it. It’s so simple.

You know what I miss on bikes?
Keys.
They're so satisfying to turn

Poor people still have keys on their bikes.

The ballers of GTAM don’t have keys….

EDIT: before I get poo pood on….no poors here.
I aint got any pictures of morocco, im also a poor

I have keys, but no $50,000 motorcycle. :(

My 1986 Niva 4x4 had manual choke on the dash, a manual priming lever on the fuel pump and an engine hand crank!
(Sadly I never tried the hand crank - mounted a winch on the bumper and bent it so the crank wouldn't fit)
