Car hit deer

I was hoping my first post would be something a little more positive.....

Driving last night and my car hit a deer. Had a body shop look at it this morning - its about $2000.00 to repair. No structure damage. Just headlight, fender, hood and bumper

So 2 questions

1. i only have basic coverage on the vehicle - would insurance cover this?
and
2. is it worth it? I was a new driver who hit the deer and a claim at this point would probably spell disaster for later on.

Opinions?

for reference car is a 2005 Honda Civic sedan.

Lots of Civics out there. Check Kijiji and auto wreckers for good parts. If you're handy with a wrench that stuff should be easy to fix yourself.

I don't know for sure but i think that would be covered under comprehensive?

+1 to looking into wreckers as there are millions there.

If basic coverage means liability only, then I don't think you're covered.

Why not look at your policy and see what they put in writing? Also factor in the deductable. My wife bent in a door panel on her van and I picked up one that was a matching colour from a wrecker for $500.00 and replaced it myself. The body shops were quoting $1500 to $1700.
Youi might get better responses on a Civic forum.

I had the same thing happen this summer, same damage. Called my insurance company, they told me my coverage didn't cover the deer. But then because I called them I had to provide proof that I got the car fixed and a new safety done.

My opinion is don't let insurance know, just get it fixed and go on your merry way.

That's why you ask "hypothetical" questions.

What happened to the deer? Last road kill I got I sent out to be pickled (corned) and it is delicious.

Car is being fixed. Not through insurance. I'm just going to suck it up and pay out of pocket.

I dont know what happen to the deer. It kept on running after the impact.

Its funny, we pay all this money for insurance, then when we need it, we dont want to use it for fear of rates going up.

You're not even covered for it.

I hit a deer on my boss car, was covered everything
and they say it's not my fault, won't get on my record

Your boss's car probably had full insurance ie, comprehensive, collision, and liability.

Judging from that sentence he has only liability, which does not cover fire/theft or in this case hitting a deer (comprehensive).

Comprehensive claims DO NOT increase insurance premiums but claiming too much has negative effects on your insurance history.

No coverage here because you don't have comprehensive coverage.

Interesting here as well how people are recommending auto wreckers for parts......but heaven forbid the insurance company put used parts on a car and people would go ballistic.

There's a difference between me hitting something that is my fault, and someone else doing something to me which was completely out of my control.

I think when people pay their insurance every month, it is with the expectation that we are paying for the insurer to maintain a minimum level of quality when the time comes for a repair. That quality level is high because we don't benefit from cut-rate parts once the insurer is paying. When we pay for the repairs directly, we have the authority to decide how much quality we are willing to sacrifice in exchange for $avings.

If you offered a reduced rate policy alongside your regular one, with the difference being that used parts would be used in the event of a repair, then nobody would complain (if anyone even bought such a policy).
