Can I ride a used bike home from the seller's house?

Hello GTA Motorcycle!

First post here. I'm looking to buy a used bike (either Ninja500 or GS500) on Kijiji and would ideally like to ride it home from the seller's house. Is there any way to do this given it wouldn't yet be registered in my name and therefore not insured either?

Is it common to have a seller deliver the bike?

I'm just trying to avoid costs of renting van or any other mode of hauling.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!!

Yup it is easy
1 Have the seller get the safety done
2 Call your insurance company and have it insured
3 Take the paperwork to the nearest MTO ( many are open saturday as well) pay the tax and get your new plate
4 Ride home trouble free.

If buying uncertified the above steps still work (ignoring step 1) but you need to get a temp plate at the MTO which will give you 10 days to get a safety.

Thanks Scuba Steve! The bike I'm looking at is already safetied, but will I be able to get the motorcycle insured even though the bike will not yet be in my name?

you'd need to get it under your name first. here's how i did it when i purchased my first bike. this was all done in the course of an afternoon.

1. get vin/info from seller and call insurance to get bike insured
2. seller gets safety done
3. meet with seller, purchase bike and get all paperwork signed
4. go to nearest mto and put vehicle under your name and get plates
5. go back to the bike and put plates and drive away

had a few of my buddies come with for obvious safety reasons. it helps when the seller is really cool and understanding of your situation.

edit: yes you can get the bike insured even if it isn't under your name yet. i told my insurance company (statefarm) that i'm actually on my way to pick up the bike etc. and they insured it to me, emailed me temporary slips with my insurance policy. and i was good.
