Hi all, new to this forum and a new rider as well. I am looking to buy a bike in the GTA but seeing we had the first snow today, it might be about 6 months before I can actually ride it. So, let me ask a really newbie question to you experienced folk out there:

Is it possible to buy a bike (used) right now, but not plate it/ buy insurance for it till I am ready to ride it in spring? What i mean is, I will buy a bike now, but park it till spring and start all the fancy paperwork then. If the answer is yes, can someone Please (repeat Please) list how I can do that? Most importantly, how do I do it at the MTO desk/ office?

FYI - I have located a bike and semi-closed the deal, which might go through as early as tomorrow. So please, anyone reading this thread, your early input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Bring your bill of sale and ownership paperwork to the MTO (without safety certificate). They'll transfer ownership and will give you UNFIT ownership and no plates. You'll have to bring them insurance slip and safety certificate in the spring to get FIT ownership and your plates. The bad part is that the mechanic will have to show up to your place to do the safety (Ted at Rosey Toes will do it).

Why not get insurance now, maybe theft-only, just go get your insurance started. Check with some insurance companies on their winter rates.

Thanks for that info....I am agreeable to get "parked/ winter" insurance... just dont want to payout for something I wont be using for 6 mos...

Shall check around... do you folks know anyone who provides "winter" ins? My insurer TD-MM annualizes the insurance soI pay for 12 months starting now. Much perefer to do that starting spring....

TD Meloche Monnex will insure you until february for really cheap. They have pay as you ride and their contract renew in february. I insured an sv650 for $140 for 4 months with them :).

^^^ Same here (TD MM). You start your 'full' payments in March and pay 7 payments. No payments after September, but the bike is insured. So if you insure it for a year, you shouldn't be paying much for the next few months.
