Camera Lense Advice

Although I know this is a motorcycle forum, I'm sure there are some riders out there who are knowledgeable about camera (as many take pictures while on their adventures).

Long story short: My dad gave me his old Nikon FA camera with various third party lenses (Tamron). All of the lenses have adapter (Adaptall-2), so they can be used with the Nikon.

Question: Where in Toronto can one get advice if these lenses can be used with newer DSLR cameras or with different manufactures?

I want to take a photograhpy course, but would rather use a digital vs 35mm film.

Henry's or Vistek should be able to help you out. Theoretically you should be able to use the lenses on a new DSLR as long as you have the right adapter.

Photo camel is a pretty good forum with lots of knowledgeable, helpful people on there.

For the most part the Tamron lenses with Nikon mount will mount on Nikon DSLRs. You may loose the automatic features like Program, etc. but full manual will work. I use Tamrons with Nikon mounts with an additional adapter on an Olympus DSLR. Manual use only.

If you want to take a photography course and want the features of your newer DSLR available with the lens you use consider trading one or two of the older lenses in to get one designed for your camera. Something like a fixed 50mm lens will teach you more about photography in terms of framing the subject and the lower ranges of these types of lenses are not that pricey. The Canon one costs $120 for instance and is a 2.8f lens which means it works well in lower light conditions and also is a bit more forgiving in terms of camera shake (quicker lens). You may want to think about a cheap tripod too as unless you have a good image stabiliser on the lens it will make a big difference in the quality of pictures you take. It also makes you think more about the pictures for framing purposes too.

Zoom lenses are good for having do-it-all lenses for travel etc, but photography courses usually stress the art side of things and that's why a fixed lens is good for making you think more.

Thanks for the tips!

Never thought one could trader a couple of older lenses for another lense. Good idea.

You cannot use the older AI Nikkor lenses on Nikon DSLRs. It will damage the camera body. If you're not sure, if it has a little lever on the lens base that flips out, it's a no-go. Check Henry's website. There are usually short f/l 1.8 and 2.8 prime AS and AS-D Nikkor lenses coming in on trade that can be had reasonably, and they will warranty your purchase against fungus and other common problems.

Fullmoto,

Lenses are Tamron with the screwon adaptor so may be okay, but you are correct if they have sticky outy bits do not pop them into a DSLR. I would check when you go into the store and look at the particular camera you are considering. While you are looking at stores check out Downtown Camera as well. On Queen just east of Yonge, not a bad place.

You might want to check out the courses first to see if there are any requirements for camera, lense recommendations etc. before you buy.

If they can be used at all they could only be used on the enthusiast and pro bodies ie D90, D7000, D700,D600,D800,D3,D4

Any newbie D3xxx or D5xxx will definitely not work with them.

When the d3000 came out it was the only dslr that could meter with the old lenses.

I thought the new 3xxx and 5xxx only worked with the G lenses.

Thanks for clarifying.

Thanks for the advice. Ended up going to Downtown Camera (good service) and was advised to use the current setup.
