I lost the alternator on a diesel car on the way to Chicago. Failed before Sarnia. Bought a big battery charger. I would drive for a few hours watching volt meter and then charge for a few hours. Made it but tired. I don't think I would try the generator in a car.

Edit: I guess it weights less than a passenger, so it's likely fine.

That's part of the genius. I always thought they were heavier for some reason (having never used one), but 50 lbs is nothing.

I would have given him bonus points if he continued on with his trip. Bike should be fine perpetually with that janky looking setup.
