Buying used bikes - checking UVIP guarantees bike wasn't stolen?

So by checking UVIP would it give you the peace of mind that the bike wasn't stolen? And that there are no liens on it?

There is a guy who is selling three different sports bikes. Two 600 cc and one 750 cc, they're about 4-5 years old. Price isn't bad.

Yep. Don't let the liens scare ya too bad either. If any show up on the UVIP call the lien holder and verify it's been discharged (but the MTO wasn't informed/updated), then hassle hard with the seller to drop the price lots because of all the work you'll have to do to get it cleared (nobody else will touch it with a lien showing).

Get the VIN#'s from the seller and pull your own UVIP's, don't trust ones provided by the seller.

Good luck with your bike purchases :)

If the Lein is not registered by the dealer/bank them it will not show up on the uvip.

But don’t rely only and 100% on the paperwork. Trust your gut too.

If I was dealing with a guy selling 3 bikes at the same time I may ask myself, “why does he have 3 bikes?”

I mean, owning two bikes I understand, but three bikes would be pretty unusual. Perhaps even more so if he is selling the three at the same time. Just ask the questions and see what his answers are.

If you are asking on this forum about the possibility of the bike being stolen, maybe you already think the guy is shady. You can still proceed with the deal, but double check and triple-check everything, and then everybody happy at the end.

Is this bike registered to his name? Did you look at the VIN on the bike and match it to the paperwork?

Yeah I will be getting my own UVIP for sure after I get the VIN and match that to the ones on the bike. Have not see the bike yet, but we'll see. :)

Ok I ignored that deal, too much weirdness. I found another seller, got the UVIP, it showed that there was a lien on it. I then contacted the seller and he said that was left from the original owner (one prior to him). The seller then contacted the bike store he bought it from to get the bank to clear the lien status. According to the seller, it is a mistake, everything was paid and its just the matter of getting the MTO updated.

I am told now that if I were to check the MTO's UVIP status, it would be clear of the lien status.

My question is - If the lien status is no longer on the UVIP, can I buy the bike clear of all worries? Is there any way the bike might be reposessed - say for loan defaults or theft or forgery?

I read this thread and I'm not sure how much truth there is to it, but its troubling to hear that its possible to reposess a bike even without any lien status on the bike.

I asked about a UVIP on an ATV and was told by Local Serive Ontario registry office they do not have UVIP for off road vehicles, in the link above the OP states he had UVIP for selling the off road vehicles that were to be repossessed.

Here's my story on UVIP's and dirt bikes. I got my daughter a JR50 and I bought a UVIP for it before purchasing. Good thing too, because I discovered the bike was still in the dealer's name that the "seller" bought it from. Not a huge deal but it took a couple days to get sorted out. Then I just got my son 65SX that I did not purchase a UVIP for. I triple checked it with CPIC to ensure it wasn't stolen and since the guy had the ownership everything was kosher. When I went this past Monday to transfer it into my name, I never had to purchase a UVIP for it. Every car or truck I've ever bought, I've HAD to purchase the UVIP at the time of transfer, but not so with my sons bike.

Go here, pay $8 by credit card and you'll get the most up to date info about liens on a bike

No point paying $20 for another UVIP

If I punch the VIN into this above website, and the results are "No Match", that's a good thing right? (assuming the VIN is correct)

Search Criteria: JKAEXVD108A10xxxxNo Match.
No registered financing statement or registered claim for lien was found for this enquiry.

Yes, that means the bike is owned outright by the seller. No issues so you get the title and you're good to go

Thanks. Turns out, there's a ministry office 2 minute walk from my office. Even better luck? 1 person in line. UVIP in hand, bill of sale ready, only needing the title and ownership from seller and howyoudoingGTAM?
