Buy now or after the holidays?

I always get the best deals on used bikes in the winter. Some people need storage or get out of the sport at end of the season. I just sold my bike for cheap so I could get a 2023 in the spring .

Better prices now than April for sure.

But the best time to negotiate is right before people put the bike away in storage around Sept-Oct, especially if they have to arrange and pay extra for off-site storage.

If it's already in storage, then it costs the seller nothing to wait a few more months and get better money in the spring.

I've always found deals in late autumn. Even new ( the only new bike I ever bought - CB500x ) had $500 off for the first time in the model history.

Well, maybe not. If the bike is insured, or purchased on a loan there is an ongoing monthly cost. Depending on where it is stored you might be able to retrieve the bike mid storage season to sell it.

Based on some comparables the fall of 2020 I feel I got a fairly good deal on my 2019 Tracer GT when I purchased it late December 2020. Had it delivered 1st week of Jan 2021. I think dealer and private sellers are motivated to move bikes ASAP vs. keeping them another 3 - 4 months until the spring. There may be holding costs including inventory expenses, space issues, interest costs + insurance that are avoided by moving the bike out vs. holding on to it.

To me, it’s always been a matter of patience. If you research the bike you are looking for and get a feel for price points, then you’ll notice a deal that is worth pursuing.

And sometimes letting folks know what you’re looking for and word gets around and someone reaches out to let you know they are selling etc.

When demand is high in the spring, you might find some bargains on models that are less desirable or higher end. But entry level and old used stuff is going to be higher priced for sure.

Winter time, most have their bikes put away already but, you might find someone wanting to unload their bike to have some cash now instead of waiting for spring.

Dealerships will offer to keep the bike until delivery in the spring.

The market is kind of cooling with interest rates increasing and cheap play money evaporating. So you might find some dealerships looking to move some inventory.

Just take your time but be ready to buy when the right deal comes along.

If you are after a specific bike (or a few models) you could throw up a wanted ad. When xmas credit card bills come in, you may get a bite when someone is investigating how much their bike could sell for.

I would say that if you see something you're interested in, make an offer now. Sometimes the guy might have it in his garage and if it's gone he can park his car in there. I have friends that cover their bikes and leave them outside, that guy is really ready to deal if thinking of selling. Dealerships too are ready to deal at this time of year. They don't have the money coming in that they have in spring or summer. Just got an email today from GP, free Felt bike ($789) with purchase of any new bike. If you're on their email list you know how many no hst, or $25 gift card emails they have sent you in the last 4 weeks or so. Motorcycle dealers at this time of year still have big bills to pay. There are going to be a lot more people looking to buy bikes in the spring. I would try to make a deal now if there is something you're interested in.

True for bikes with liens on them. but for insurance, IIRC, most Ontario companies pro-rate the insurance so they charge a negligible rate for the winter months.

You may save ~5% off your annual insurance bill if you sell in October vs March, so it's up to the seller to gauge if they can get more than that for their motorcycle in the spring. Unless he's paying facility insurance for a rat bike, In most cases, the answer is yes.

Yes, for bike shops, most of their holding costs are fixed anyway, doesn't matter if there are 2 bikes or 20 bikes on the floor. But for a company that keep the lights on by moving motorcycles, it's definitely in their best interests to Always Be Closing, regardless of time of year. Frees up more floor space for incoming models, trade-ins, etc.

I got the Felt bike deal, anybody whant to buy a bicycle lol

I'd assume with interest rate hikes, riders with big mortgages and lack of disposable income may be willing to sell off their bikes.

Seems kijiji is still full of "kij-idiots" thinking they can get last years covid prices for their 10 year old bikes...
