Bug bite reactions?

A buddy got bit on his last MC trip up north and it's been a nightmare. Vomiting, muscle cramps and nasty hives. That was six weeks ago and he's still getting over it. Docters figure it's bug bites but don't know what the bugs were into before they got to him.

Then it turns out a couple of his co workers got bitten while camping up north and are suffering the same symptoms.

Anyone else experienced bug bite horrors this summer?

I'm headed north in a week.....

Damn, I (and one of my kids) react to a lot of bugs but normally localized swelling and itching.

Brave Wilderness guy gets bitten/stung by almost everything horrible. A couple have put him in the hospital but IIRC most wear off after less than a week.

I'd be surprised if your buddies issues were canadian bugs. I have heard similar reactions from exposure to some rainforest bugs and canadian docs suck at diagnosing it as they have never seen it before. Or maybe spiders/snakes that are venom based. Normal bugs aren't trying to poison you.

You can have bad reactions to black flies. A youtuber Joe Robinet , a good Canadian outdoors guy, had similar reactions and has to be very careful.

My wife looks like the elephant man when she gets bitten by mosquitoes. Pretty much ended my camping excursions when I hooked up with her. Not as much fun around your campfire when your significant other can't leave the tent.

Gee, I hope its not Lyme. Also, be afraid of giant hogweed. I brushed up against some leaves recently, ended up with a painful stinging rash that morphed a day later into large red dots.

Can't be certain but I think Lyme was ruled out

You're describing symptons sometimes associated with the West Nile virus. Were they tested for this? West Nile is creeping northward due to warmer summers and climate change in general.

I have to assume all three were seeing competent docters and it was ruled out , but not sure.

Assume nothing. Ask them. WN is often overlooked and specific disgnostic tests not done.

I’ve been eaten alive some days this summer, normal reactions. Had one unknown that ballooned my hand, passed in a few days.

Most people I know that frequent the north develop some immunity early in the season. You probably notice your first mosquito or black fly bites last a day or more, after a few weeks of getting bitten, they are gone in an hour or two.

When I was a teen I got a water borne infection from swimming in a lake north of Algonquin, same symptoms to your friend. After losing 30lbs they isolated me at NYG Infectious disease unit. Doctors thought mercury poisoning, Crones, Shingles until another man who was at the same camp presented the same symptoms as me.

After losing 30 in 10 days, antibiotics finally cleared it up. Final diagnosis was acute bacterial colitis.

That must have really sucked.
I contracted lichen planus from swimming at the beach at a resort in Mexico. I believe it was Acapulco. I also got a Giardia infection in the bowels after cleaning dog poop off my sneakers.
Oh, and there was this girl I met...oh, never mind

Ya lucky bugger. I too have lichen planus. No idea how or where I got it.
My understanding is you get for life. Could flare up again any time.

Little brother caught something while swimming in Monaco.
He thinks he saw a turd in the water around that time.

Last week I had to bandaid a couple of the hundred bug bites I had, to stop from scratching.
These were the bugs that come out at dusk and like the legs, so I didn't get a look.

I had this 20yrs ago as well just after playing in a baseball tournament in Toronto. Docs believe I got it either shaking hands after games or the sketchy restaurant we celebrated at. Lost 25-30lbs of muscle in 2 weeks. Worst part was the horrible abdominal cramps.

Got to keep that water out your mouth and yer bum (no Cannon balls)
Jokes aside other than the weight loss (which I could use) it sounds terrible.
I was got poison ivy so bad I almost ended up in the hospital. luckily not on any "private parts" or in my mouth but almost everywhere else.
Started on my hands from simply picking something in the forest (flower etc.) Now I have to be very careful touching any kind of plant as I get an allergic reaction and from what I have heard it will be with me for life..

Kind of sounds like it may be Giardia Lamblia, except I don't remember the hives from when my wife got it.

Mosquito venom is heat sensitive. I have a Therapik I got from Lee Valley for about $20. Powered by a 9V battery, you put the tip on the bite and cook the spot for as long as you can stand the heat. No itch or swelling for me.

I don't know if it works for the hyper sensitive.

Not being a smoker I can't guarantee that a hot cigarette held as close to the skin would do the same.

Obviously a bite on the bum or back is tricky.

Poison Ivy reaction is an allergy. Some people are OK with it but others can't breathe near it.

Oddly enough goats really like to eat the stuff when they are used to clear brush.
