Biker dies protesting N.Y. motorcycle helmet law

Oh the irony. Thats when you know your fighting for the wrong things...

Protesting fail 101

oh my.....

what is the charge/fine for riding without a helmet?

I heard its $110 up here, standard **** you fine... similar to a seatbelt fine. Just what I have heard.

I was reading the comments in a NY area newspaper where this poor guy died. Sad situation but some of those comments are pretty entertaining. Apparently someone really needs to educate the americans on what socialism is.

How is this fighting for the wrong things? They don't want the state to have laws to protect people from themselves, they want to be able to decide for themselves whether they want to wear a helmet or not. I'm sure most of them are perfectly aware of the risks and what they want is to be legally able to take them.

Lol Lets take away obligatory child safety seats and seatbelts too. It's not really the rights of the individual that are at play here..it's the rights of the general public to reduce the risk of paying taxes or contributing towards healthcare or having beds taken up for the continued treatment of badly injured citizens who could have avoided said injury by simply wearing a helmet...the wearing of which has been statistically shown to reduce said injuries. The ones that die from not wearing a helmet are not really the problem.

Yeah, but if you carry with that reasoning, and not far I might add, you can make the argument if you should allow motorcycles at all. Perhaps require extra coverage in your insurance for brain damage if you want to go without your helmet.

You could extend that reasoning but name one country in the world that has? Instead, many countries/states have just asked for the bare minimum requirement of a helmet and I don't think that's a lot to ask for. Look at France where helmets are mandatory but recently someone tried to insist that bikers wear a fluorescent orange strip....they didn't gather on mass to get rid of helmets as most of them think they are a sensible idea...instead they were protesting the more idiotic ideas.

Now this is a great idea, you gotta pay more and then it isnt a burden on society. It makes total sense actually, not that I would ever do it.

This is USA, they don't have a public healthcare yet. In Canada this argument could make some sense, if it was supported by some data, about specifically who is a greater charge to the society:
- a guy who doesn't wear a helmet, can suffer greater head injuries, but is also a lot more likely to die, or
- a guy who does wear a helmet, has less extensive head injuries, but survives many more accidents,
where both guys suffer similar injuries in other areas of the body.

Why wouldn't you want to wear a helmet? It stops bugs and flying things from getting in your face, and reduces the wind noise tremendously.

Still I agree the GOV shouldn't be forcing anything on anyone like this, if they choose to not want to wear it, its their own damn choice.

+1 Sometimes people need to be saved form themselves. And sometimes the rest of us shouldn't have to pay for the lunacy of others.
