Bike won't start... help!!

I'm a newb in this so I only have minimal knowledge of what I'm doing, so hopefully I can get some help here ><

Basically, I have just topped off my oil, and wanted to take it out for a ride. I made sure the oil level JUST hit the top when I was filling up. When I push the start button with the choke fully open, it seems to want to crank the engine to start, but never made it. After several tries, it wouldn't even respond. However, give it some rest and it'll be repeating the cycle.

Gas is full to the top. I wasn't the one that fill it up but the seller did (just got the bike 2 days ago).

Any advice would be great. The battery is pretty new so hopefully that's not it.

Thanks in advance!

Just to the top of what? Try also charging the battery up. If the engine isn't turning over that could be a reason.

Unfortunately I don't. Can I jump start it using a car?

I didn't jump the bike yet, but I did notice that the gas control (where you can turn it on/off/reverse), was turned to off. Didn't remember when I did it, but would that be the problem? I've turned it back to on and going to give it a couple of mknite

Yes having the fuel off would problem to get the bike started and running. But that won't affect the bike from not cranking over.

if your engine doesnt have gas, yes its a problem.

Would letting it sit a while have the problem resolve? Or should I still jump start it? I'm just asking while I wait for the gas to flow back in (hopefully)

If you drained your battery on your earlier attempt, you'll need to jump it (or get a battery tender to charge it back up).

Definitely get the battery charged up. But more importantly, filled the oil to the top of what? If it's the sight glass you are referring to, was the bike upright or on it's kickstand? If you overfill the oil and continue trying to start it, you can cause engine damage.
Good luck, Jeremy

Thank you all.

Firstly, I can ride the bike now, it starts and just got around the block several times with it, it seem to run fine... but what does a newb know right?

Secondly, battery seems good (well, at least it started), oil was just top of the sight glass, when it was on the center stand. so I assume that won't be over filling it....

Finally, the issue: yes, it was a stupid human mistake (of mine). I turned the "fuel tap" (referring to the owners manual term.. not sure what else it should be called) to "off", which I assume that my previous number of tries ran out the engine of any left over gas, so it finally stop starting... now that it's back to on like it's suppose to, the bike is running again.

Thanks for everyone's help... and it's great to know there's a place I can go to when I make mistakes and try to fix them haha.

Another point is that your gas tap doesn't have a "reverse" position. It is reserve. If you run out of gas then you can flip to the reserve position and there will be a few litres of gas to get you to a nearby gas station. Remember to flip back to the on position after you fill up. This is on carburetted bikes only.

go to canadian tire tomorrow and buy a trickle charger.

haha thanks. I typed too quickly and someone the two words danced tango in my head... I did mean reserve tho... good thing there's no reverse gear on the bike XD

I have a new, in the box, Battery Tender Jr. I got it for a relative who was going to get a bike but didn't, so PM me if you'd like it and I'll sell it to you cheap.
