Bike went down what to do?

Got into an accident and the bike got dropped, side fairings scuffed and some damage to side markers etc. I barely touched the cage rear bumper.

Reported to collision center however I'm not sure if I should just replace the fairings or get the insurance involved to fix it. I don't want my rates to go up and don't want them to write it off either due to the cost of fixing it. I would like to keep the bike, what are my options?

by law you have to report it if the damages are more than $1000 and/or if someone got hurt.

If the owner of the car doesn't care about the bumper (which could easily cost more than a thousand to fix) then it's up to you.

The insurance company might have a rule that you have to tell them about the accident but you don't have to make a claim if you don't want to.

EDIT: sorry about your bike. glad your ok.

2nd EDIT: Read the sticky thread at the top of this sub-forum. lots of good info

Glad you're okay...

Some will disagree with my statement but my experience was that once you report it to the collision centre, the insurance will be notified and it'll impact your premium regardless of whether you submit a claim or not. This is based on my own experience and what the insurance adjuster told me after they were notified by the collision centre.

thanks dasiffy! I'm ok but does reporting to ins. and making a claim increase rates since we already pay too much.

You rear-ended someone, you may not have a lot of say in the matter.

I think the CRC is partly funded by the insurance co's so they would definitely report the damage.

Well did you pay off the car driver or are they going through insurance for their damage? That's the most important thing st this point

No, I didn't pay them off, I offered but they wanted to check with the dealer first and I know what that would cost, lol. So we decided to report and I think they took off didn't see them at the CRC...interesting fact...they got a speeding and seat belt ticket just before accident.

Well you are SOL anyway then. It's way less hassle for them to report to their insurance and let it get taken care of and let you get buttfucked by your ins co.

Yeah, I was hoping they would agree to something reasonable but I don't think they would won't cpl bills, it's more like $1500 dealer pricing.

You already reported it to a collision centre; your record has that accident. I'm not a lawyer, so take it with a grain of salt, but I'd say at this point you may as well make a claim, since it's the accident that hurts you, not the claim, and that's already on record.

of course it will. a Insurance company might even make your rates go up even if you VERBALLY tell them, i would have asked the driver ill pay him in cash to keep Insurance OUT OF THIS situation.

+1 on this. The CRC doesn't report it to insurance. BUT as soon as the cager reported it to his insurer they were on the phone to your insurer. becuase it is a rear end collision their insurer is going to get paid back from your insurer.

So in essence your screwed at this point. Your rates ARE going up, (unless you have accident forgiveness and you exercise that option). So why not put it through insurance that way at least you will recover "some" of the extra your going to be paying your insurer for the next few years. At this point your going to pay higher rates so why also pay to fix your own bike??

Unless it is an older bike and in pretty rough shape they aren't likely to write it off for scratched fairings etc. IF they decide to do that, there is nothing that says you have to accept that offer. You can say. Thanks but no I will fix the bike myself. Even if they did write it off you can take the money, (don't accept first offer), then buy the bike back at auction.

1500 is nothing compared to what you'll pay in insurance in the next 6/7 years

Most insurers get CRC reports automatically. So, yes, reporting to the CRC will often result in a call from your own insurer.
Also, in Ontario your own insurer pays your claim. They are not paid back by the other insurer. That's what 'no fault insurance' means.

OP - You have one year from the date of the accident to report your claim to your insurer. Check in with the other party and see what they want to do. I agree with the other post in that $1,500 is nothing compared to the potential increase in premium. If they are willing to settle than settle. But if they claim you're screwed so you might as well claim too.

As for your options, if they write the bike off and it is not branded salvage, just take a cash out directly from the appraiser. no need to buy it back at auction.

As of today I haven't heard back from the cager, no report yet.

At what point do they write off the bike? does it have to be totaled?
