So i just picked up my 03 r1, but what happens with it sometimes is it wont fire right away after sitting overnight or like after a long period. It will crank but wont turn over. Then as soon as i turn it off and try again it fires up with no problem.
Im almost certain it needs a good tune up as it was sitting away, and even he says the gas is from last year.
So would old gas cause this? Maybe the plugs need to be changed? It has a brand new battery so i dont think its that. Im gettin my platsd on it tommorow and am gonna go for a good run and burm that gas out and put some premium in and see if that helps. otherwise any suggestions?

Also, can you use fuel injection cleaner in a bike or should it be strictly that seafoam stuff?

Thanks!

Aside from a tuneup depending on the milage, I would look at the relays. Check a service manual to see if one is for the ignition system. A sticking relay will eventualy engage if you cycle it. If you have several similar relays you could try to swap them to see if the problem exists. My wife's R6 uses premium gas as per yamaha, isn't the R1 the same?

ya thats not a bad idea to look into that! I will have to get the manual and see where the relays even are! Seems be working better though with some fresh gas from last night, so will see how it goes!
Im really not sure if it uses premium, i would assume so as thats what i put in. I know for one model year though it called for reagualr apparently

How many km and and if it is higher have the valves ever been checked and/or adjusted? Out of spec valves can cause hard starting.

20,000. I think this is around the mark where the valves should be checked right, so maybe thats not a bad idea.

With 20,000km you might as well do it then as I believe they are supposed to be done around 24,000km. Since you have to get to the topend now is the perfect time to change the plugs and air filter, if you are doing it yourself I would maybe even check the compression just for peace of mind.

I have never checked the valves myself, so not sure if im comfortable with that yet!

If u are paying someone to do it no need.

I say u just need new plugs. Nothing to be alarmed about

Re: valve adjustment - the service manual doesnt call for valve clearance check until 42k KMs.
