Bike rebuild.

I am trying to convert a hybrid bike into a cross bike.

I have a ross mckinley frame, with shimano components.
I dismantled the bike and as far as i can tell the Shimano biopace crank is busted, chain is some what worn, front derailer is not shifting properly. The rear freewhell and gears looks ok.

Is it possible to change the crank and chain and front derailer by itself? or both front and rear derailers and crank and gears need to be changed?

The chain is like a motorcycle chain. If left too long, will wear the chain rings/cogs to suit, and a new chain may skip on old cogs, especially the more used ones. To check your chain measure 12 links. 12 1/16" is acceptable wear. Anything over 12 1/8" and it's pooched. You can replace the parts independently, but there are 3 different kinds of cranks (road, MTB standard, and MTB compact) and 4 different kinds of crank to bottom bracket interface. There are 3 different front derailleurs with different radius' on the cages to suit the different sized cranks/rings. What I find curious is your use of the word "cross". A true cross bike is for all intents and purpose a fairly steep/short road bike with canti brake mount braze ons and 700c wheels with wider rims/agressive tread tires. A hybrid will have completely wrong geometry and wheel size. If you want a true cross bike, find a Jake the Snake on kijiji. They usually go for reasonable money.......probably less than trying to fix/convert the Ross.
