Bike died while riding

Bike is an '09 Daytona. A few days ago while riding, I noticed the fuel light turn on. I had just filled up with gas earlier in the day so I knew something was fishy. About a minute later the bike suddenly died while accelerating. I pushed the bike into a parking lot and was unable to get the bike restarted, so I had it towed home. (Thumbs up to MotoLimo btw)

The first internet search I did told me to check the battery. After putting the battery tender on, the bike fired up without hesitation and I took it for a ride around town for about half an hour with no problems.

Does anyone know what would cause this problem? Should I just get a new battery, or do I have a larger underlying problem here? I'd like to avoid getting bent over by the dealer if possible.

Check your charging system.

Fully charged battery at rest (key off) should show approx 12.6 - 12.8 volts between the battery terminals. With the engine running at various speeds, it should show between 13.5 and 15.3 volts. If it is showing below the at-rest voltage, your charging system is not charging the battery at all.

^ yup

sounds like you may have an issues with your stator/rectifier. Basically like the alternator of a car, if its not charging your battery, the entire bike is running on battery power and under load your batt will just die. If the rectifier/regulator is not regulating the the charge in your charging system your electronics will start to do so me weird things and act like its possessed.

Something similar happened to me a while back. Turns out one of the screw on the battery post was loose. Once tightened, the bike started like new.
