Bike died on highway... Need advice

Hey everyone,

Bike is a 2007 suzuki sv1000s.

So im on the 401 and notice my low fuel light is on. Thing is i just filled up my tank at a busy gas station. Bike then starts to lose power like im running out of gas. I pull over and check the tank. Its full of gas...

I turn the key off then on again. Lights work etc. I push the starter but nothing happens aka no starter motor and all electrics die. I wait a few secs and then electrics come back on.

Dont know if its related but a few days ago i was at a stop in neutral and my bike bogged out and died. Along with it a small puff of smoke came out from my triple tree area. I turned key off and on and it started fine. Noticed afterwards that the coolant overflow tube had a crack in it and assumed that was the smoke. Thing is there was no trail of dried coolant. I assume leaked coolant would leave a trail on the motor no?

If you can find a hill I'd see if bump starting it would work. Once you get it running head for help.

Electrical problems are rough, if you can get the thing started get to your place or mechanic of choice to diagnose whether your battery/rectifier/starter are done.
 
Im getting it towed now. Not about to try and bump start on the side of the 401 express lane lol

Bike died while on as well so wouldnt that rule out the battery?

I had similar problems just recently. Died at a light, bump started it and made it another 500m then died again. Lights came on but when I hit the starter everything went dead, let go of the starter and the lights came back on. Got it towed home and checked the batt, it was shot. Bought a new one and went out assuming that's all it was but it did it again. Got it towed home again and tested the reg/rec and stator and they were both toast. I know with my bike the reg/rec is a common thing but not sure about yours.

Your issues are in bold.
You will need a new battery likely but test the outputs on the reg and rec.
Just save the grief and look on Ebay for new ones or a salvage yard.
You should be able to change the parts yourself in an hour or less.
 
Check the basics first like the battery. That puff of smoke you mentioned makes me think it's more than that. Have a look at the rectifier wiring. Often the rectifier connector will melt causing charging problems and would explain why it died and wouldn't restart.
 
Mechanic says its the stator.
Ordered a new one will see how it goes

have your mechanic check the wiring harness around the sterring head, where you saw that puff of smoke.
 
My bikes at Teds lol you might have seen it if youve been in. i already ordered the stator ill talk to him about the harness though

Hey guys
I had something similar on my 99 blackbird. One day about to go for a ride and heard that the start wasn't as quick and sharp as always, went out anyway. 30 min into the ride stopped for coffee and couldn't start the bike again. It seamed like a battery, so I replaced it.
Few days later exactly same thing happened so I took the bike to my friend that fixes bikes on the side.
Checked the battery, it was fine. Resistance on the stator coils was fine (1.4 ,the same on all 3). All wires seamed fine and no corrosion.
Turned out that the regulator rectifier wasn't giving enough voltage to the battery on idle and just enough at 5000rpm.
So I ordered an aftermarket one, half price of what honda charges. The new one didn't come with a connector so I had to switch all the wires. Installed. voltage checked 14.7V. everything is Great :)
Two weeks later (last nite) my bike dies on qew. I managed to get a spare battery and drive it home. So as I'm trying to find the problem right now ...
Battery checked.
But this time the resistance on the stator coils changed to 0.5 (1.4 two weeks ago) even tho its says that 0.2-2.0 is fine. What I also noticed that when I replaced my reg/rec I connected the yellow wires and put shrink wrap to isolate. now the wrap opened up from the heat iI guess and the yellow wired were touching for sure :(
Im not sure if two weeks ago we checked the voltage on the wires going out of the stator (3 yellow wires) but now as I'm checking it my meter says 0.2V - weird. It should be somewhere around 40Volts.
Some people say the way to check with a meter is ground with yellow wires, some say you only should use yellow ones to check the voltage.
I havent gotten back to the regulator rectifier yet... seams like my stator is dead, probably because on the faulty wrap and shortage of stator wires.
Does anyone has a different theory ?

I change my batteries every 4 years (convectional batteries) weather they need or not. Low batteries taxes the charging system greatly.
Heated charging systems have a good chance of failure. Low batteries and bad charging systems generally make for bad performance to no performance. Look at them all, look for ground faults, I don't know the fuse systems for you bike but see for faulty connections, oxidation at
contact points or barely alive fuses. If it is fuel injected check that system, If it is the computer, etc. etc. All mechanical and electrical is not an island one effects another check them in sequence and make sure each sequence checks out according to your bikes specs.
It sucks more than anything when your bike is done at the side of the road. That's why a new battery every 4 years is cheap.
Keep it clean, tight, and fit at least one could try. I have had some of that happen in my past 250,000kms or so, I don't like it but still I try to keep Murphy away. I found the four year rule has ben the best for me.
