Had a quick look around on the interweb but didn't find what I was looking for. Anyone got an opinion on the new battery technologies for replacements for a large (1000cc+) sport touring/touring bike. I'm looking at ballistic or something similar but I don't know if these are exact replacements and I still can't see for sure whether I'd need a dedicated charger for some of these batteries. Not sure whether to go with OEM (lead acid), LiFePo or something similar.

Anyone got an opinion?

if the lead acid works good for you, leave it at that. The gel batterys are good as well.
If you need higher cca's or weight is an issue, then thats when you'd want to look at a ballistic, or similar battery.
imo...

Lithium iron is what they claim is in it- got it from flying squirrel- I was hesitant at first especially about the price, but it was worth it
I got one in my R1 (from the same guy), works amazing. A bit funny to start in the cold but hasn't let me down yet!!

You don't need a special charger for em either :) Shorai FTW!

Agree.. Shorai FTW. Not forgetting that you must not use a charger that has a de-sulphate feature.

Ahhh, yes yes. For the record, NO Battery Tender brand chargers have de-sulphate ;)

Had to get an OEM brand Yuasa for today but it was only $80 prepped and charged taxes in which wasn't bad I thought. Anyhoo...while I was there I asked the guy about the lithium batteries and he seemed to think that they weren't good for the bike's charging systems etc over the long haul. Is he right?

He's on crack. Nobody has ever had a problem with lithium and their charging system. If anything it's probably easier on your stator/rectifier because it holds more capacity and voltage so the bike dun need to work as hard to charge it back up after starting/idling.

The problem with Lithium is that they don't like the cold too much (ever leave your phone or GPS outside?). In order for you to warm it up you need to crank your bike several times. The advantage of lithium is they tend to hold a charge longer, ie. you can charge it up in Fall & don't worry about it 'till spring. Charge will still be there. There is no acid to worry about here.

Lead Acid is better in the cold but when fully charged, their voltage/charge starts to drop once they are not charged. They need to be maintained more regularly.

My personal take? I'll stick with Lead Acid for the time being. They're cheaper, I tour abit and ride when its a bit cooler. I'm not going to put additional stress on my starter motor. If I had a track bike, that's probably different

Here is my impression of Shorai as used on my Ducati Diavel 2012. True does not like the cold. However, it cold starts early in the morning with temperatures about 0 -10. I turn the bike on and leave it for a few minutes - starts every time. Needs some cranking, then fires right up. Never been stuck. Bought my Shorai from Glen(Flying Squirrel). Battery crashed on me completely. Shorai wanted me, at my cost, to send the battery to them in the States, via UPS, who at the time wanted so much paperwork re lithium, they where a complete joke. Lucky for me Glen is the man. Took the battery back and said he would deal with them at his expense, returning the battery. The next Shorai sat for about 2-3 weeks and went flat. A quick charge from a regular charger (non sulphate) and came back to life in about 20 minutes. Took it down to Glen to check the battery and the Shorai charger and said all was good. Now have the battery in the house and without a charge it is holding at 13.28 for the last 3 months. Stick it on the bike soon, as I am away in sunny cold Florida. If anybody is interested in the follow up please let me know.

I have a one too, the bigger one with the 18 in the pn. Worked great all last season and I just left it into the bike all winter with no tender and the bike fired right up. On real cold days I just leave the key on while I'm getting ready so the head light draw heats up the battery a bit. Never had a problem starting my 998 cc engine.

The one time I wished my headlights turned on when the key is on :(
