Best place to get security license?

you have the go to the main offices downtown to get your license.
also, now with the new law...you have to take a training course so call private security and investigation services main offices and they will help you out.
i once got burned by a company, and lost 400 dollars out of it :(

You can do the required learning online. Basically any place is as good as another as long as their course is recognized by the ministry. It's all about passing the exam (SERCO) after training is complete.

It's 60 questions and I think 60% passing mark..

Unless you are after contractor type training it's just a 40 hour course to be able to write the test.

Why would you rather flip burgers? lol

I'm starting police foundations and hopefully becoming a cop in the next few years. I figured this would be a good part time job while in school.

Did it for 9 years & the novelty wore off. In your case, it is an excellent job that will give you an idea of what its like to do that kind of work & see if its for you or not. Security will most certainly help you develop the skills needed for policing & It will really help you shine in your interview when they start digging for life & work experience.

Get a spot at a mall or similar where you're dealing with people on a daily basis. Sitting in a car guarding construction zones isnt going to teach you squat.. Make up for the lack of pay with the abundance experience.

If you'd like, I can put you in contact with my old employer & put in a good word for you. Just shoot me a pm.

Good luck!

The real sketch starts after your liscenced. There are so many crap/dishounest companies out there. Some even operating without an agency liscence.
The industry is desperate for guards. Just do your homework when dealing with any employer.
We are short 3-4 guys if you want to workk in Collingwood. I can give you hours tomorrow.haha
Good luck achieving your goals. Be safe.

I did mine at ontario security training, place is pretty sketch and the stuff they taught me wasnt even on the security test. However, ontario security training do offer you employment through their network though, so can't complain about that.

Yes, it's a perfect job if you're in school. But I'm trying to leave the field right now, and I'm not even one year into the job. Just note, most sites only give afternoon and night shifts since morning shifts are for supervisors. You can probably work a morning patrol but no time for studying and homework.

And btw, I've spoken with a few people and they say police foundations is a waste of time and money if you want to become a police officer.

Look for larger contract companies that can offer you the course and training (Intercon, G4S, Garda, Primary Response), etc. Do *not* answer sketchy ads in the paper for security guard training.

As for Police Foundations - it's *not* a waste, seeing as police forces are looking for ANY post-secondary education. I've known plenty of people with Police Foundations who have gone on to be cops. Having said that though, it's not absolutely *necessary* to take that specific course. Ironically enough, if policing ultimately doesn't work out, a police foundations/law enforcement diploma is almost always compulsory if you instead look to become a Special Constable, CBSA, municipal by-law enforcement, etc. In other words, any law-enforcement type job that is NOT policing.

As for security work: try not to get stuck doing it too long. Yes, the experience can be valuable when applying to become a police officer. But it is ridiculously low-paying, low-respect, and soul-crushing work. It is also easy to get yourself into situations that can ultimately make your police applications completely moot. Get your experience while you're in school, apply for whatever organizations you're going to apply for, and GTFO as soon as you can.

I totally get what you're saying. I'm doing this STRICTLY to pad my resume. My main goal is to be a cop, but if for some reason it doesnt work out I would probably apply for casino security (eye in the sky, not security guard) or special constable. By taking foundations I can branch out into other careers while I'm applying for YRP.

Security while in school P/T, then a better job that requires schooling, then YRP. This way I'll get life experience (which apparently is huge for the job), college and a better resume.

Think I should take language classes or martial arts? Would it help at all?

I'm not a police recruiter, but I'd imagine that language classes are useful. And I don't mean Japanese or Swedish, but Cantonese, Korean, Arabic, etc. I don't think police forces are *that* keen on martial arts, considering that they want you to use the training that they've prescribed to you. But then again, I'm not a cop, nor a recruiter.

Either way, keep your eye on the ball and you'll either be a cop or something just as worthwhile.

A friend of mine (next door neighbour) did the whole police foundations, criminal justice route. He was told by the OPP and TPS that they are looking for visible minorities; he's blonde, blue eyed. He's facing a long future of security work or applying out of provice / GTA

I've heard this, yet I've seen/known many white guys who have become police officers. I'm thinking that the competition is a lot stiffer.

I'm sure there are lots of white guys, but going by what he told me, the current recruitment process is heavily towards minorities, unless your last name is Blair, Fantino or McCormack

I stand by my original quote. Competition is a lot stiffer. But it's not impossible.

I'm not saying it's right. And this is coming from someone who has more than a few "minority" cards to play.

Its so wrong.... they are hiring people based on what they look like instead of the best canidate.

PM sent, best of luck to you. If you want it bad enough you will become a cop. Some times it takes a few tries. Just don't give up if you don't make it the first time. Had a buddy try three times before he got on.

Casino security is great, they want you to have shift work experience.
