Best City Commuter?

Interesting video, if insurance was better for multiple motorcycles I would 100% look at one of these as a 2nd bike to commute to work, in town riding etc.
What are your thoughts?

For inner city use, buy a good quality electric-assist bicycle.
No licence or insurance hassles, easy to park and it'll get you around faster than anything else.
Save the heavier iron for getting out of town.

Good quality assist bike may be the perfect solution. Wife wants one, I think its great. No plates or ins as said, and maintenence should be pretty simple . No gas tank so its hard to get objections to parking it indoors if desired , You may not want a 50-60kms commute but for a lot of downtowners it makes sense.

If my commute was within 10-15km I’d be 100% riding a pedal assisted bike. Easy to ride. Easy to store. And no plates or insurance required.

Currently I’m at 55km…so no thanks.

As for the perfect motorcycle for commuting. IMO the CBR 250/500 is awesome. X is ideal simply do to seating positions and being higher up to see what’s up ahead.

I have to agree, pedal assist is a very good (if not the best) choice. depending on distance.
I would advise anyone to research their infrastructure prior to purchase to ensure they have a "safe-ish" route.

As for my reality. I'm 1.5km from my office, so a good pair of shoes is always the best choice..

Do you ever feel clausterphobic or is that enough distance to make it feel different (like you're not working and living in the same space)?
My commute is about 8 steps to the basement. Sometimes I hate it because there is no separation at all between work and family life.

Good at times. Garbage at other times.

For a big city like Toronto I still prefer a small ICE motorcycle. A small 250cc will comfortably go thru the city on the 401, DVP, QEW -- you can't take an e-bike or Grom on those routes.

1.5km is about a 10-15 minute walk so it is a very different space and area.
In my opinion as someone who worked from home for years this is a healthier solution. For me at least..

Friend's kid had an electric assist bike in Toronto.
Someone simply tore the control module off of the handlebars, and it messed up some of the other guts.
Over $500 later, he doesn't ride his bike into town anymore.

Mini-motos might get the job done adequately, and Groms are great for parking lot fockery, but for all-round fun, a sumo would be my choice. Slap some good tires on and you'll be good to pass on the grassy median.

I see 16 lanes in this picture:

That's unfortunate, there are d*ckheads everywhere BUT one bad experience doesn't remove the efficiency of such devices for inner city transportation.

Unless you have an indoor guarded area to keep it, it is only a matter of time before bad things happen.
My son has two bikes. One POS to ride to school, work etc, and another for times he does not have to leave the bike anywhere.
He tried to ride his nice bike and on the first day someone tried to steal it.

Grom costs me $37/month

Erm. I’ve done plenty of highway on the Grom. You sure aren’t going to be passing many people, but it’s legal and it can do 100.

My CBR125 was nothing special on the road, but it kept up to traffic just fine on the 400 series highways.

Isn't it the same motor in the GROM? Less gears IIRC, and smaller package.

You're braver than me. I saw a GROM on the 401 a couple of weeks ago, the rider was in a Rossi crouch buzzing along at full blaaaaaa about 90 between Yonge and Dufferin. An R6 was following him, I presume to make sure he didn't get run over.

CBR125 I might try... but a GROM would test my mettle.
