Bent lip

Lastnite I was coming around a bend and hit a "fixed" pothole that wasn't filled proper, there was about a 2-3 inch lip from new asphalt to old.

Anyways, I was leaned over and since it was in the middle of the bend I couldn't stand the bike up and now the lip is bent.

Is there any way to repair it? If it's just the lip will it have negative affects on handling? It's still holding air but when I go into a turn now it's constantly running through my head that my rim is bent.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

If its not effecting the bike I suggest leaving it alone. MANY bikes have slight bends in the lip and most riders dont even notice. I see them all the time when changing tires. I have heard of people pulling the tire adding some heat and beating the lip with a soft face hammer. There are various places that will straighten wheels but my experience is the cost usually outweighs the cost of a used ebay wheel.

How much do they charge to straighten? I'm seeing straight rims on eBay for $300+shipping and the worst part is their not the gold that comes on my bike and the Alstares.

A couple ppl have told me to bang it out with a hammer but knowing myself I'll prob bash it too much and make it worse lol others have said take pics and bring them to city hall and make them cover any cost, but that just sounds like it'll be a very long drawn out process.

So as long as it's holding air it should be alright?

The only place that still straightens rims as far as i know is Maximum Cycle in London... but it's not cheap.

I have a small wow in one of my fronts, it's probably out 3-4mm, but i can't feel it.

The last press release I saw for Toronto's pothole repair compensation said that there were many claims (I think a few hundred) and zero cheques written. It's very likely not worth your time.

As for the rim, I wouldn't fix that, bending it bike will likely make it weaker than the little ding it has in it now.

^ That's true. Strain hardening the metal makes it more brittle and prone to cracking. I'd just look for a new front.. you can get them powdercoated to be the right colour. Maybe a winter project?

Also.. that tire is proper ****ed.

Thanks Caboose, kick a guy when he's down lol/jk I'm getting new tires this week.

Is my rim worse than yours?

Ya yours is worse. Do you notice a wobble when you ride it? Any imbalance? Tire still holding air alright? If so i would still ride on it just don't go crazy out there.

Start looking for a gold front wheel, if you haven't found one by new years just get a black one then get front and rear powdercoated gold.

Wobble, imbalance....yes, but most of that I think is due to my "proper ****ed" tires lol it is however holding air so I guess I won't really know til I get new rubbers
