I'm not an expert on Florida's education system, but I do have some experience in the US as my kids did K-8 there. In most US school systems there is considerably more focus on civics than in Canada, and there is a strong liberal bias at all levels, it starts early.
The US education system is struggling with the balance between left and right. The population is split liberal/conservative about 50/50, research shows liberals dominate education by a very large margin. Both Conservatives and Liberals recognize under-representation has had an indoctrination impact on post-secondary students, they probably fear that's happening in elementary schools too.
My feeling is kids ought to learn history, as awful as it may be. But they should not be made uncomfortable by assigning them the blame for things that happened before their time.

A lot of history is uncomfortable and it should make you uncomfortable to learn it.
That said no one should be blamed for things that happened before their time.

I agree. The problems they face in some parts of the US are related to a difference of opinion -- social justice warriors tend to like punishing people for the 'luck and privileges' of their forefathers by making them feel like they have to repay some sort of debt.
For a while, that was true and real effort needed to be put into things like Affirmative Action. I think those days are over, we should strive for proper representation when all things are equal, but not at all costs. For example, Biden's recent proclamation that he would only recommend an African American woman for SCOTUS excludes a very large percentage of the population and really discounts merit.

Not sure I'm on board with your scotus argument. They've had a long time to put an AA woman there and it hasn't happened. I do not believe it's because there was never one who was qualified.
Ronny Raygun did the same thing in 1980 and the republicans then had no problem. I think it's time they shut up and suck it up.
AUSTIN, Texas — Outraged at the parents and politicians who are trying to rid school libraries of books they denounce as inappropriate or even pornographic, a band of Texas school librarians is fighting back. Shortly after Texas state Rep. Matt Krause called for the state’s school libraries to...

1980 was different. 40 years ago there were almost women in senior roles anywhere -- business or gov't -- it was a time where affirmative action was required to break down artificial obstacles and resistance to genders and races. The US has diversity at every level of govt, the highest offices in the land had a black president and they have a black female VP today. Generals, SCOTUS, Senators, Governers, and business leaders are there in all races, genders, and sexual orientations.
I do believe an effort should be made to reflect diverse perspectives -- I'm not so sure that so many qualified candidates should be excluded before they get started.
